Course summary
TEF Bronze
University of Salford has opted into the TEF and received a Bronze award.
Sound is everywhere, from speech and music, to traffic and everyday noise. Acoustics is about exploring the physics of these sounds and the psychology of how people react when hearing them. Acoustical engineering has endless applications, from designing loudspeakers in smart phones to creating spaces where audio is at its best. Where there is sound, there is the potential to improve it through Acoustical Engineering. For more than 60 years, Salford has pioneered acoustics teaching and research and is recognised by the UK Institute of Acoustics with a route to Chartered Engineer status. Delivered over four years, or five years with a placement year, you’ll study a suite of modules designed to embed theoretical knowledge and creative application to help you become a world-class acoustic and audio professional. With a focus on real-world problem solving, you'll explore the principles of acoustics, analogue electronics, speech, environmental noise measurement, digital signal processing, psychoacoustics, audio systems and speaker design, with the opportunity to expand your areas of knowledge within acoustics by studying an additional year of specialist modules. Initially, you’ll gain an understanding of key acoustic principles and the mathematics and physics of sound, before progressing on to shape your degree around your interests, choosing optional modules in areas such as speech, environmental noise and sound perception. Based in our Peel Park campus, minutes from central Manchester, you’ll use specialist acoustic laboratories like our anechoic and semi-anechoic chambers, and learn from lecturers who carry out world-leading acoustics research, including R&D for the acoustic and audio industries. Our graduates have great prospects for a career in the acoustic and audio industries. Salford alumni have gone on to work with leading companies, including Apple, Arup, Bang and Olufsen, BBC, Bentley, Dyson, Dolby and Google. Our Audio/Sound Technology and Acoustics courses scored 91% for learning resources in the National Student Survey 2020 (University of Salford analysis of unpublished NSS 2020 data) Features This course is an integrated Masters pathway.
- Learn the acoustic design principles behind smartphones, cars and loudspeakers, as well as recording studios, public spaces and live venues.
