Course summary
This course gives you the opportunity to experience the disciplines of print, weave, knit, embroidery and biomaterials, developing expertise in a single choice or a combination of approaches. Modules are designed to develop practical expertise, introduce career directions, and help to establish professional ambitions. With an emphasis on experimentation, you will begin by developing core skills in design through exploring textile processes, visual research, colour, and composition. Group activities will develop confidence in communication and critical thinking, with an understanding of sustainability and responsible design approaches. The second-year programme broadens your knowledge of the industry and the scope of careers open to you. There are opportunities to engage with companies such as Epson and Dulux. This can include working on industry briefs, entrepreneurial challenges, collaborative projects and work placements. The final year offers you the space to develop a personal and professionally relevant portfolio through in-depth research and extended practical inquiry. There is the option of taking a professional placement year in industry before progressing to the third year of the programme. Professional Placement Year This course offers a professional placement year. This allows you to spend a whole year with an employer, between the second and third years of your degree, and is a great way to find out more about your chosen career. Some students even return to the same employers after completing their studies. The University will draw on its extensive network of local, regional and national employers to support you in finding a suitable placement to complement your chosen area of study. If you do not find a suitable placement, you will be automatically transferred back to the standard, non-placement version of the course. Please note that fees are payable during your placement year. For details, visit the course page on the Birmingham City University website.
