Course summary
Take your Restorative Dental Practice to the next level with our part-time masters programme. Through online learning, practice-based assessments and residential based study, you will develop your skills through progressive, evidence-based techniques and knowledge and be able to apply those skills to the benefit of your practice. This programme is for the busy dental practitioner who has an interest in high quality, evidence-based restorative treatment. You’ll be taught by dental professionals who have amassed many years of experience not only in teaching but also in applying their knowledge to their own patient care. The variety of teaching brings you up to date with GDC requirements, enhances your record-keeping skills, communication skills and team-working ability. Our programme covers disciplines that will enhance your practice.
- Our treatment phases teach you not only the theory but will give you an opportunity to practice those skills in a simulated environment and to then showcase your skills in structured case-based presentations.
- Each of the restorative disciplines will be covered at a greater depth by teachers and consultants including Graeme Lillywhite who will ensure your knowledge and techniques are modern evidence-based dentistry.
- Later in the programme you will learn to apply these skills and look at when and how to apply adjunct therapies such as bleaching and general practitioner applied orthodontics with an introduction to facial aesthetics.
- You will also have the opportunity to cover GDC-based requirements such as keeping your Basic Life Support skills honed and completing your core of knowledge training for the next five years.
- You will receive some business insight from world-class teachers such as Chris Barrow and Ashley Latter who will help you to understand how to enhance your practice and uptake of treatments.
- For your dissertation, you will choose a topic you are keen to learn more about or holds a particular interest for you and develop a deeper appreciation and knowledge in your chosen area.
Modules
This programme is technology-based, you can choose to study where and when you find convenient. Whether you prefer to work before leaving for the office, after you have put your children to bed or in your breaks, your laptop, tablet or smartphone will be able to access our teaching material, so you can study at your convenience. Each module is assessed, and feedback is given so that you can learn from your experience and tailor your learning experience to the best advantage to you. Participation in group forums and teamwork is actively encouraged and rewarded throughout your learning. Through this programme you will grow your network of colleagues, meeting fellow dentists from all around the UK and the world. Assessment method
Assessment, both formative and summative, occurs throughout the programme in order to give you guidance and feedback on your studies. The formats of assessment are multiple choice, single best answer, multiple short questions, small structured essay, essay and direct feedback on practical exercises. As you successfully complete each module you will be able to progress through our programme until you complete, and earn, your Master of Science degree.
How to apply
International applicants
There are three residential workshops throughout your course where you will travel to Aberdeen to have a practical, hands-on course under the direct guidance of staff members, you can meet your tutor or course director face to face and have personal teaching to enhance your cases and case presentations.
Entry requirements
You will be a qualified dentist with interest and experience of treating patients with a desire to improve your patient care. You should also be registered by the General Dental Council (if you are UK based) and have had appropriate clinical experience (Post VT if UK based). BDS or equivalent dental degree. Qualified for at least 2 years. Evidence of registration with the General Dental Council is also required for UK applicants. Application via CV and personal statement (500 words) and reference from current or most recent employer stating suitability and support for course. (If self-employed the reference is not necessary). You will need access to a clinical camera to take photographs of cases throughout the course and, of course, adequate clinical facilities and access to patients requiring treatment relevant to the subject area. You will need internet access and a computer to complete your qualification. If you have purchased a new computer since 2012 it should meet the qualification computing requirements.
