Course summary
This course combines an in-depth critical evaluation of current theory pertaining to psychological development in children and adolescents with advanced training in relevant research methods. The implications of psychological theory for policy and practice in various areas, including education, clinical and social contexts are also considered. This an ideal course for anyone wanting a career that involves working with children or for those interested in securing a doctoral training place in educational psychology.* (*Further study and / or a BPS-accredited conversion course conferring Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership may be required.)
Modules
Modules may include: The Child in Context; Social and Cognitive Development in Children; Research Skills for Working with Children; Observational Methods; Development Profiles of Language and Learning; Psychological and Behavioural Difficulties in Childhood; Career Focus and Development and Child Psychology Independent Research Project.
Assessment method
Assessment is via coursework, essays, examinations, laboratory reports, literature reviews, and a research project.
Entry requirements
An undergraduate degree equivalent to a UK undergraduate Honours degree (minimum 2.1) in psychology, or an allied discipline (supported by relevant experience of working with children) or other recognised equivalent qualification. Allied disciplines include childhood studies, behavioural sciences, education, social sciences, and speech or language therapy. Applicants without such qualifications will be considered on an individual basis but will be required to demonstrate how their experiences and knowledge would enable them to study this course at Masters Level in their personal statement.
