Course summary

This course will allow you to develop a range of specialist technical skills, enabling you to meet the demands of employers in the computing sector and to adapt to a constantly changing world. The programme will cover a broad range of computing topics that may be encountered in modern business. You will benefit from our excellent cutting-edge computing facilities, small student groups and extremely supportive, industry-experienced teaching staff. By completing this course you will achieve an industry-recognised HNC, which will enhance your career prospects and your employability. During the course you may also have the opportunity to gain additional professional IT qualifications with further study. The course will cover a broad-based overview of computing, which will allow you to develop wide-ranging skills and knowledge. You will gain academic, technical and professional training, leading to the skills necessary to design, implement, support, evaluate or manage IT systems in a vast range of industries, with the aim of gaining interesting and well paid employment, or continuing your education to BSc (Hons) level. You will complete the HNC with one year of full-time study, and could then choose to continue to a HND with a further year of study. You will be expected to attend College for a minimum of 16 hours per week: two full days, or a combination of days and evening sessions. Our computing courses are delivered in small groups, by lecturers with a wide range of industry backgrounds. The teaching team have adopted a hands on approach to best familiarise you with industry practice. On successful completion of the HNC you can progress on to further study with our HND or choose to enter employment. The course opens up excellent career opportunities in IT, where you could gain employment in roles including computer programmer, IT specialist, IT support, database designer and more. If you choose to top up to an HND we will be offering the following specialist pathways (subject to approval): Network Engineering Security Applications Development We will also be offering a non-specialist ‘Computing’ pathway, which allows students to complete a Pearson BTEC Higher National Diploma without committing to a particular professional specialism.

The units available for study on this course are likely to include: Programming Networking Professional Practice Database Design & Development Security Managing a Successful Computing Project Systems Development Life Cycle Web Development You will complete a Computing project as part of your programme of study. This project will be set by the Awarding Body, Pearson.

Assessment method

Assessment is 100% assignment based. There will be no formal examinations on this programme. Teaching methods will include lectures, practical sessions, group work, tutorials and workshops. In addition, substantial learning resources and support materials are available online, facilitating home study.

Entry requirements

Qualification requirements

You will need: GCSEs A*-C in English and maths or Functional Skills, AND IT Apprenticeship Level 3, OR A BTEC Level 3 qualification in Computing, OR A GCE Advanced Level profile that demonstrates strong performance in a relevant subject, or adequate performance in more than one subject, OR Other related Level 3 qualifications, OR An Access to Higher Education Diploma in a Computing or related subject. We also welcome applications from mature students who will be considered on relevant work experience rather than qualifications.
