Course summary
The Higher National Engineering awards are designed to provide each student with engineering knowledge and understanding appropriate to their engineering interests, employment and vocational needs. The Higher National Certificate is a part-time course that progresses students who have achieved Level 3 qualifications to develop their personal effectiveness and employability, in particular their ability to learn, to communicate, to work with others and to solve engineering problems. It is possible to study this course as an apprentice. Modules
To achieve the new Higher National Certificate (RQF) you will be required to complete a selection of modules which amount to 120 credits. There are both core and specialist units on this course: Core units: Engineering Design, Engineering Maths, Engineering Science, Managing a Professional Engineering Project Specialist units: Engineering Management, Electrical and Electronic Principles, Digital Principles, Electronic Circuits and Devices. Specialist units for each cohort may vary in accordance with employer/Managing Agents requirements and will be determined prior to the course commencing.
Assessment method
A wide range of assessment methods and equipment appropriate to the learning outcomes and assessment criteria will be used, and will consider the practices used within the engineering sector. Whilst credit is awarded at a threshold level of achievement only, grading arrangements will apply to individual units which will allow for the reward of merit and distinction achievement according to Edexcel's published grading domains and criteria. Provision will be made for all engineering Higher National students to be eligible for grades beyond a pass level. Assessment is considered an important part of the learning process. In designing the forms of assessment for this award, care has been taken to ensure that all assessments test the skills and knowledge needed in the Engineering working environment. Formative and summative assessment methods are diverse and include problem based assignments, work-based projects requiring oral and written reports, individual exercises experimental work, work-based assignments and phased tests.

Qualification requirements
UCAS Tariff - Not accepted
Applicants would normally be expected to have at least 2 A Levels including Mathematics or a Science subject or a Level 3 qualification in an Engineering specialism. The Level 3 qualification should include a Further Mathematics unit and a Science unit, having achieved at least two units with a Merit grade. Entry requirements are for guidance only. We welcome students with equivalent qualifications and combinations. Please contact us to discuss further.

Entry to the course requires all students to complete a successful interview.
Other
All applications will be subject to an interview and a Maths screening test which will assess previous knowledge at Level 3. Applicants will be assessed on individual experience and will be expected to demonstrate an ability to study at Higher Education level. Students should be able to demonstrate a strong interest in a relevant sector of Engineering.
