Course summary

The very best engineers working in industry not only have exceptional engineering knowledge and skills but they also have a solid grounding in commercial decision making, finance, economics and planning. The main difference between this programme and the standard MEng Mechanical Engineering degree comes in year 4. Where the standard MEng programme offers two year 4 options, this programme has one option for year 4 and it contains the 15 credit "Business and Management Essentials" course. This particular course is designed with engineers in mind and aims to provide students with a broad ranging introduction to wide variety business and management topics, which should enable them to perform more effectively as graduate engineers and more senior roles were they are likely to have broader responsibilities. There are a number of examples where our engineering graduates have moved into MD and CEO roles within the oil and gas and other industry sectors. This degree programme is ideal for those individuals that wish to strengthen their understanding of key business principles.

Assessment method

Students are assessed by any combination of three assessment methods: coursework such as essays and reports completed throughout the course; practical assessments of the skills and competencies they learn on the course; and written examinations at the end of each course. The exact mix of these methods differs between subject areas, years of study and individual courses. Honours projects are typically assessed on the basis of a written dissertation.
