The Higher National Diploma in Sport and Exercise Science is an ideal qualification for people who aspire to work in the health and fitness industry, sports coaching or education. The two year programme provides enthusiastic individuals with the opportunity to study a broad range of core and optional modules, which have been designed to enable a multidisciplinary study of sport and exercise science at higher level, which will provide you with the knowledge and understanding of how scientific methods and principles are applied within the study of sport and exercise.

Assessment method

Assessments are designed and delivered in the context of realistic workplace situations and might include a range from the following throughout the duration of the programme. • Leading practical sessions (coaching, fitness/gym based, field-based and lab testing) • Presentations • Work-based learning • Practical exercises • Short tests • Written reports and essays • Project and dissertation Each unit can be assessed at Pass, Merit or Distinction levels, which are combined at the end of the qualification to give an overall grade of Pass, Merit or Distinction for the qualification.

Qualified teacher status (QTS)

To work as a teacher at a state school in England or Wales, you will need to achieve qualified teacher status (QTS). This is offered on this course for the following level:

Admission tests


All applicants are required to attend an interview and will be notified of the date via email and UCAS Track. Applicants applying from outside the West Midlands alternative interview arrangements can be made for you but we strongly encourage all prospective applicants come along to view Solihull College and University Centre’s facilities and meet the teaching teams. At Interview original certificates including GCSE’s will be required, applicants applying for our Early Years courses will be required to bring evidence of DBS check, Art & Design and Media students a portfolio or show reel will also be required for interview. Mature students who do not meet the standard entry criteria but have appropriate industry and life experiences will have their prior learning and skills taken into account. Please allow 28 working days from receiving of your application to a decision being made and UCAS Track to be updated. This time may increase if there is missing information from your application (applicants will be contacted directly to request this) or during busy application periods such as 15th January equal consideration date and possibly February.

Criminal records declaration (DBS/Disclosure Scotland)

Applicants applying for this course will be required to bring evidence of DBS certificate.

Institutions Own Test (IOT)

Applicants who do not meet the standard entry criteria but have appropriate industry and life experiences will have their prior learning and skills taken into account. Applicants may be required to complete an Aptitude assessment (this will be advised at interview).

English language requirements

Students who are non-native English speakers, or who have not studied the final two years of school in English, but can demonstrate capability in English at a standard commensurate to IELTS 6.0, with a minimum of 5.5 being awarded on individual sections for a level 4, 5 or 6 qualification, will be considered as eligible to apply for the programme/course.

Additional fee information

Attendance on a variety of trips may be a compulsory part of the course and students will be required to pay the associated fees. You also have the opportunity to gain additional professional qualifications including Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing, First Aid in the workplace and National Governing Body coaching qualifications. Photocopying and printing costs Costs depend on the direction and ambition of your work. We suggest budgeting approximately £250-£300 for materials and work-books in the first year.
