Course summary

The taught course in Oncology is a day-release modular programme designed for medically qualified candidates who intend to pursue a professional career in some aspect of clinical or medical oncology, either as a clinical academic or a clinician. The course is designed for students who are currently working in the NHS (or similar clinical service provider) and will suit those who are planning to complete Specialist Registrar training. The course will help students develop their own careers by equipping them with a high level understanding of the theory and practice of cancer science, of advanced cancer treatment, and the science of cancer research – all to the benefit of cancer patients.

Modules

Year 1 modules: Radiation sciences for the clinical and medical oncologist; statistics for the oncologist; cell and molecular biology of cancer; pharmacological treatment of cancer; radiation sciences in theory and practice (optional); experimental cancer pharmacology (optional). Year 2: Research methodology; less common cancers; gastro-intestinal and urological malignancy; breast and gynaecological malignancy; respiratory, head and neck and skin; palliative care and late effects; cancer in context. Year 3, either: Dissertation; thesis; peer reviewed paper.

Assessment method

A variety of assessment methods are used to test the student’s learning including: multiple choice papers, case studies, critical reviews, reflective diaries, critical debates, audits and protocol development discussions.


Entry requirements

A Graduate medical degree; 2 years postgraduate experience in clinical medicine; current registration with the UK General Medical Council or international equivalent; non-native English speakers require IELTS 7.0; the additional desirable qualifications are: at least 6 months of previous clinical experience; evidence of planning a career in clinical or medical oncology.
