Course summary

This research-focused programme allows you to study dance science within a world-renowned conservatoire. It focuses on applying research to dance practice across recreational, training, and professional settings. This programme is for anyone with prior dance experience who is interested in dance science, such as dancers, choreographers, scientists, teachers, lecturers and health practitioners. Key Features

  • You will learn within a culture of high calibre conservatoire dancers, interacting with over 300 students committed to becoming professional dancers and choreographers. Cross-disciplinary study opportunities with students on other postgraduate programmes are also integral to the learning experience.
  • The programme examines the disciplines of physiology, biomechanics and psychology as applied to dance, and the intersection of these disciplines with embodied and somatic practices. There is a strong focus on research throughout the programme and an independent research-project culminates the programme experience.
  • Our team is internationally known in the field and work with professional companies and organisations around the world. Trinity Laban is a founding partner of the National Institute of Dance Medicine and Science (NIDMS) and a supporter of the International Association for Dance Medicine & Science (IADMS).
  • Our in-house Screening Programme and departmental research projects give you the opportunity to gain valuable experience of working as a dance scientist while you study.
  • Our specialist facilities include a versatile testing laboratory with dedicated support staff, a specialist dance library and 12 dance studios.

Principal study options

During the application and audition process, you must select which instrument(s) you wish to specialise in for the duration of your course. On this course, you can choose from the following options:

Single specialism

Only one instrument is studied. It may be possible to study a further instrument formatively, but this will not contribute towards the qualification.

Instrument/specialisms

For all courses, you must select at least one specialism from the 'primary' list. For those studying primary/secondary pathways, two instruments may be selected – one from the 'primary' list and one from the 'secondary' list. Joint pathway students may select any two instruments from either list.

Entry requirements

Applicants are expected to have an appropriate first degree (or an equivalent qualification). Applicants without formal qualification are subject to the Institution’s recognition of prior learning (RPL) process. Decisions are made by the RPL Panel with delegated authority from the Assessment Board. An External Examiner may decide toscrutinise the evidence supporting a claim as part of the Assessment Board process.

In the event of a successful assessment, applicants may be invited for a further interview prior to being made an offer.

Remote assessment recordings may be accepted in the event that you cannot attend an assessment in person.
