Course summary
Parasitology is the study of parasite organisms such as viruses, bacteria, worms or insects, parasitic diseases, and their impact on host species. The ever-changing relationship between parasites and hosts makes it a dynamic and diverse scientific field. Following the devastating impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, our need to better understand parasitology is greater than ever. Parasitologists make an invaluable contribution to our understanding of biological functions. Through cutting-edge scientific research, they explore how parasites fight to survive in their host, so they can identify solutions to eradicate many pandemic diseases that impact on society. The Parasitology programme offers a broad-based education in modern Parasitology, with opportunities to tailor course content to suit your interests. Depending on your module selection and chosen research project topic, you can follow one of three tailored pathways within the overarching MSc Parasitology degree programme. Available with full and part-time study routes, this genomics pathway provide learners with both core parasitology knowledge and genomics focus, ready to apply in healthcare, science or research fields. Start dates are available each January and September. On successful completion of the programme, you will receive the MSc Parasitology (Genomic) award. - Study at a recognised centre for parasitology research with broadly-based expertise in all of the major platyhelminth groups, ectoparasitic arthropods and parasitic Protozoa
- Further your knowledge of human, animal and molecular parasitology with specialism in genomics
- Explore the growing medical biotechnology field and understand more about infections disease control
- Learn from passionate and knowledgeable biomedical science staff with expertise in parasitic disease in humans
Assessment method
All modules are assessed 100% by coursework except for the optional Medical Biotechnology module, which is assessed by examinations. You will receive feedback on all practice and formal assessments.
Entry requirements
Applicants should possess at least a UK lower second class honours degree (2:2) or equivalent in either Biological, Medical, Veterinary Science, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Biomedical Pharmacology, Zoology, Biomolecular Science, Biotechnology or Biomedical Lab Technology.

If you are a high-achieving international student, you may be eligible for one of our scholarships. We have a range of scholarships available for students applying for courses in 2020-2021 and 2021-2022. Our Global Gold Excellence Scholarship is worth £3,500 and our Global Silver Excellence Scholarship is worth £3,000 - both are available for students studying in our 2021/22 intakes. We also offer the Salford International Excellence Scholarship which offers up to £5,000 discount on tuition fees.
