Course summary
Biomedical engineers are responsible for developing engineering solutions to help solve medical problems. The course will produce high-quality biomedical engineering graduates with technical, professional and employability skills for the allied health industry. Our degree will enable you to be part of exciting product developments including robots to help the disabled walk, advanced prosthetics, machines for complex treatments, diagnostic equipment and artificial organs. You can also get involved in smart technologies and apply them to transmit data directly to clinics, minimising the need for patient travel. Emergency situations can also be caught early and prevent a decline in patient health. Biomedical engineering is a dynamic and exciting area of growth and innovation, and one which will develop rapidly in the coming years. This course enables you to develop your science and maths knowledge in order to pursue your biomedical engineering degree and provides professional biomedical engineering practice, alongside the opportunity to build professional networks with industry. You will be taught by an inspiring and diverse community of teachers interested in inclusiveness and social mobility Our innovative course has been designed in collaboration with industry and a research medical clinician. You will have the excellent opportunity to work with a range of employers. We offer a truly immersive and inclusive learning opportunity where the applied elements of the course are delivered in professional standard environments. The course is designed based on CDIO (Conceive Design Implement Operate) methodology where students will interact with industry from first year through industry-oriented, real time projects. We are one of only a handful of universities to offer the pioneering CDIO international engineering education model, developed by the world-renowned Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). CDIO gives you a rich hands-on experience that you can deploy to develop technology to provide biomedical engineering solutions. You could find solutions to urgent issues in health, patient treatment or development of products required by medical teams and much more. At CCCU, most of the CDIO projects are outsourced by Industry across Kent and you will design and develop one or two CDIO projects in each semester along with technical sessions. This will help you to create the bridge between industry and academia from the beginning of your course. You will graduate with the skills needed to work across the health and medical technology sectors - areas that are growing every year. You will gain key employability skills and be encouraged to take up placements, helping you to go straight into employment upon completion of your studies. Each engineering programme learning outcome is based on Engineering Council AHEP 4.0 standards. Location This course is run at our Canterbury Campus in Kent. Canterbury is just 50 miles south-east of London and less than an hour by high-speed train from St Pancras. Located on a UNESCO World Heritage Site the campus offers state-of-the-art buildings, right in the centre of a vibrant and world-famous cathedral city. You’ll benefit from a campus with excellent learning and teaching resources, music venues, a superb sports centre, a well-stocked bookshop and plenty of coffee bars and places to eat. A short walk away is Augustine House our award-winning library and home to a vast range of learning resources and student support teams.
