Course summary

The Higher National Diploma (HND) in Mechanical Engineering allows students to achieve a qualification equivalent to the first two years of a degree. Taught by industry specialists dedicated to ensuring you acquire the skills and knowledge required to succeed in the sector, the programme offers the opportunity to develop an in-depth understanding of the various aspects of engineering and related professional standards. Work Experience and Industrial Placements There is no requirement for work experience or a work placement within an Engineering company, although it is encouraged for those that have not currently employed in the sector. Using our excellent links with local employers we will always support you in finding a suitable placement. Qualification Gained Pearson BTEC Level 5 Higher National Diploma in Mechanical Engineering. After the Course If you successfully achieve your programme of study, you will be awarded a Pearson Higher National Diploma (Level 5) in Mechanical Engineering after which there are a number of options open to you. On successful completion of the HND Mechanical Engineering, you could apply to complete a top up to B Eng degree. Your other option would be to seek employment with an engineering company.

Modules

You will study a range of units that will develop your specialist knowledge and skills. Listed below are examples of units that are likely to be studied: Year 1 (Level 4): Engineering Design, Engineering Mathematics, Engineering Science, Managing a Professional Engineering Project, Mechanical Principles, Fundamentals of Thermodynamics and Heat Engines, Fluid Mechanics, Materials, Properties & Testing. Year 2 (Level 5): Research Project, Professional Engineering Management, Further Mathematics, Advanced Mechanical Principles, Virtual Engineering, Further Thermodynamics, Control Systems. Please be aware that modules studied may change periodically to reflect developments in the discipline. Students can always find the most up-to-date information about your modules and who is teaching them in the course handbook. As with all HE programmes, students are required to take ownership of their learning and development and should expect to spend time studying and completing assessment tasks with independence outside of lectures. Additional one to one support is available by student request in addition to the class contact time in taught sessions.

Assessment method

You will be assessed using a range of methods including presentations, assignments and practical assessments. Feedback will be provided to you in writing, along with information reflecting your performance and recommendations for improvement.

Qualification requirements

Applicants will be invited to attend an admission interview before an offer is made and will be advised of the criteria in advance. We welcome applications from mature students (aged 21 and over as of 1st September in the academic year of admission) and do not necessarily require the same academic qualifications as school leaving applicants. English language requirements

International applicants will be required to evidence English language skills - this could be an IELTS score of 5.5, with a minimum score of 5.5 in each component, a grade 4 in GCSE English (or equivalent), or having recently completed a Level 3 qualification taught and assessed in the English language.
