Course summary

This Level 6 Top-up programme is designed to allow both students from a prior approved qualification and applicants with relevant experience to progress to an honours level degree The programme is delivered by experienced practicing Performing Arts professionals and academics who have a wide range of skills and relevant industry experience in TV, Film and Theatre. For example, working with ITV, BBC, Channel 4, Sky, The Bolton Octagon, The Royal Exchange in Manchester and The Lawrence Batley in Huddersfield. The programme builds on your previous learning and experience, giving you the opportunity to produce work of a professional standard within your Performing Arts specialism. The programme prepares you for the reality of a challenging and competitive industry. It gives you a range of experiences and roles to fully prepare you for a portfolio career in the Performing Arts, such as writing, accounting, directing, producing and promotion. The programme provides the opportunity to work collaboratively across different disciplines, creating a professional and vocational experience. For example, this could include music students, as part of a Musical and Film, Media and Media Make-up students on film projects. Students in their final year will perform in a ‘Showcase' which they plan and organise and invite industry professionals. This potentially gives students the opportunity to meet and perform in front of agents and casting directors as well as other industry contacts, possibly in an external venue. The programme offers a range of opportunities to enhance your learning. For example, overseas trips, visiting guest lecturers, live performance opportunities and professional commissions.

Modules

Advanced Creative Practice: This module will develop your skills to perform and produce work in an ensemble in a range of genres and styles. The emphasis will be on professional practice and you will be expected to rehearse, develop, perform and produce advanced pieces with expression and within stylistic conventions. The module will involve high-level rehearsal and development sessions leading to performance and productions that should reflect the progress you have made throughout the rehearsals/ development. You will respond to direction, demonstrate your enthusiasm for performance and show professionalism throughout all the different aspects of the module. You will perform and produce content working and communicating with other creatives from different backgrounds, ensuring that you respond and respect their creative views. Individual Case Study: This module enables you to carry out theoretical and practical research into a particular practitioner, company or movement, which relates to your individual vocational interests. You will explore research methods and look at key conceptual frameworks to investigate your chosen movement, company or practitioner. By carrying out a detailed analysis through this case study, you will apply your practical and theoretical findings to the development of your Independent Project. The research, when completed, will be presented at a University Centre based symposium. You are encouraged to explore and develop interesting and performative ways of presenting the work. Freelance Working and Self Employment in the Creative Industries: This module will provide you with the understanding, skills and underpinning knowledge to allow you to enter the Creative Industries either on a freelance or self-employed basis. The majority of people working in the Creative Industries, especially at the beginning of their career, are either self-employed or work in a freelance capacity. It is to be expected that you will have a ‘portfolio career'. The module will allow you to develop a network of professional contacts, to create an appropriate professional portfolio, either physical or online, and to work within the relevant and appropriate legal and statutory frameworks. You will be allocated a personal mentor at the outset of the module and will tailor your final portfolio to suit your chosen specialism(s) within the Creative Industries. You will draw up a detailed career plan that includes at least three ‘milestones', you will consider the relevant and appropriate support organisations and/or professional bodies for your chosen area(s) and identify how they might support you in your career. Independent Project: This module is a substantial piece of work that will enable you to demonstrate the extent of your achievement on the degree as a whole. You will be allocated a personal tutor at the outset. You will draw up a detailed proposal and have it formally approved by your tutor. The proposal will explicitly state any requirements in respect of health and safety and ethical practice, especially in relation to research projects involving people as subjects, for which separate approval is required. You may work individually or in teams. In the latter case the proposal must identify which components the team will be assessed on with a single shared grade and which you will be assessed on as your own individual contribution. The completed project can be in a format of your choice; it could be a performance, composition, installation or collaboration. You will be responsible for all the different elements, including booking of equipment, venue/spaces, budgets and promotion/marketing. This will be evidenced in a substantial portfolio that will be submitted as part of the summative assessment.

Assessment method

Assessment has many forms including of an performance, vlog, blog, essay, presentation, viva voce or portfolio. Across the programme a range of assessment formats will be utilised that will reflect the nature of the module (theory or practical) and to account for different learning styles.

Qualification requirements

Typically an FdA qualification in Performing Arts or a related discipline or 120 credits at NQF Level 4/5 or equivalent. 80 UCAS points.
