The European and Middle Eastern Languages (EMEL) course enables students to combine papers in one of the languages taught in the Faculty of Modern Languages with papers in Arabic, Hebrew, Persian or Turkish, providing opportunities to take advantage of the cultural links which exist between a number of European and Middle Eastern languages. For example, appropriate combinations might well be French and Arabic, German and Turkish, or Hebrew and Russian, but even some of the less obvious pairings would provide similar cultural and historical linkage. For example, Spanish and Turkish would be an interesting combination for the history of Sephardi Judaism, while Persian and Portuguese are important for the study of early colonial expansion. Qualification requirements
You would usually be expected to have the European language to A-level, or another academic equivalent. We would not normally expect you to have any knowledge of the Middle Eastern language before starting the course. We expect you to have taken and passed any practical component in your chosen science subjects. A range of other international qualifications is also acceptable for entry. Modern Languages Admissions Test (MLAT)
The MLAT is paper-based and consists of eight language papers (Czech, French, German, Italian, Modern Greek, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish), a Language Aptitude Test (LAT) and a Philosophy paper. Each paper is 30 minutes, except Philosophy which is 1 hour. No course requires more than two papers. The MLAT must be taken on a set date which can be found at ox.ac.uk/mlat. All applicants must register in plenty of time and before the registration deadline, 18.00 BST on 30 September. See ox.ac.uk/mlat for further information.
Oriental Languages Aptitude Test (OLAT)
The OLAT is a 30-minute paper-based test. It is for those applying for certain languages from scratch and is designed to assess ability to analyse how languages work, without knowledge of any particular language. The OLAT must be taken on a set date which can be found at ox.ac.uk/olat. All applicants must register in plenty of time and before the registration deadline, 18.00 BST on 30 September.
