Course summary

Do you want to understand and develop the skills to deal with current environmental issues? If yes, then environmental science is for you! An Environmental Science degree at Aberdeen will allow you to understand more about the environment from the local to global scale. It will allow you to appreciate the impact humans are having on the environment and how it can be managed. During the Environmental Science degree you will study an interdisciplinary programme which includes Environmental Biology, Geography and Geology, Soil Science, and Chemistry. This degree will enable you to explore the science of all these topics, taught by experts who are actively involved in environmental science research.

Modules

All students take eight courses in year 1. This is a combination of core compulsory courses and an optional course chosen from across the university disciplines.

Assessment method

Students are assessed by any combination of three assessment methods: Coursework such as essays and reports completed throughout the course; Practical assessments of the skills and competencies they learn on the course; Written examinations at the end of each course. The exact mix of these methods differs between subject areas, years of study and individual courses. Honours projects are typically assessed on the basis of a written dissertation.

Scottish Higher AABB A minimum of 4 H at AABB (C at AH may substitute for B at H) obtained at a single sitting or a minimum of 5H at AAABB obtained over 2 sittings. Must achieve at least BB from two science or mathematics subjects. Standard Grades 1, 2 or 3 or Int 2, or National 5 at grades A, B or C in English, Mathematics and in either Chemistry or Physics.
Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate (first teaching from September 2016) DDM A minimum of DDM with the main subjects being Science or Maths. Also required: GCSE at C or above in English or English Language, Mathematics and in either Chemistry, or Physics or Dual Award Science.
Scottish Advanced Higher ABB For Second Year entry a minimum of 3 AH at ABB, a minimum of two must be Science or Maths subjects (including the subject(s) nominated for Honours). Standard Grades 1, 2 or 3 or Int 2, or National 5 at grades A, B or C in English, Mathematics and in either Chemistry or Physics.
International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme 32 points A minimum of 32 points, with a minimum of 5 points at HL required from 2 Science or Maths subjects. For Second Year entry: a minimum of 34 points with a minimum of 6 at HL in the subject(s) nominated for Honours. A minimum of Standard Level English and Maths also required.
Leaving Certificate - Higher Level (Ireland) (first awarded in 2017) H2, H2, H2, H3, H3 A minimum of 5H with 3 at H2 AND 2 at H3 OR AABB including a minimum of H3 or BB from two Science or Maths subjects. The grading within band B must be at B2 or above. O in English, Mathematics and in either Chemistry or Physics.

Additional fee information

International Applicants: When you are thinking about studying overseas, it is important that you understand all the costs involved and budget accordingly. It is essential to budget for your studies prior to leaving your home country, and arrange all your funding for BOTH your tuition fees and your living costs. Rest of UK (RUK) Applicants: Tuition fees for entry in 2020 at the University of Aberdeen, for students domiciled in England, Wales and Northern Ireland are £9,250 per annum, but the University has capped this so that no student will pay more than £27,750 in total for their three or four year Honours degree, or £37,000 for a five year Honours degree (with the exception of Medicine). There are no up-front tuition fees, as you can apply for a government loan to cover the fees. The loan is not repayable until after graduation.
