Course summary

The course provides a comprehensive understanding of equine management and will equip you with the necessary knowledge to assess the welfare needs of horses, enable you to acquire practical horse management skills and devise management strategies pertinent to the equine sector. Our brand new state of the art Animal Management Centre, opened in June 2018, has extended our high-quality provision for Equine HNC students. Students opting for the equine management pathway will also benefit from expansion plans of facilities at our Auction Mart Campus. These facilities currently include an indoor arena and stabling, with full supporting equipment, show jumps, cross country jumps, fitness profiling of a horse and a weighbridge. The course will be taught using well integrated practical and theoretical sessions, providing an opportunity for you to experience real-life situations. Teaching and learning will take place through a combination of lectures and seminars providing an opportunity to share knowledge and experience and providing a forum for discussion and debate. In addition to timetabled sessions, 10-12 hours of personal study will be required each week. You will be expected to become resourceful and to take responsibility for your own learning. Independent research, reporting on own reading, one to one guidance and small group discussion will help you progress. Your independent study is supported by the excellent Learning Hub at the Aireville Campus, in addition to the College’s Specialist Support Centre. Modules include horse husbandry, management of equine facilities and horse & human relationship. HNC is a nationally recognised qualification in its own right and is the first year of an HND course. The HND will be offered providing there are a sufficient number of students.
