Course summary

Nursing is one of the most rewarding careers to enter and on qualification registered nurses are employed in a variety of settings. Learning disability nurses work with people who have a diverse range of health conditions, some of whom will be facing the most challenging life events. As a learning disability nurse you will deliver care to a range of adults and children with learning disabilities, while also gaining a broader awareness of the needs of all client groups and meeting the challenges of a changing healthcare environment. With access to practice learning placements, this Masters degree provides the opportunity for graduates to enter the nursing profession. It will enable you to register as a qualified learning disability nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), having developed the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to help plan, coordinate and deliver care in a safe, compassionate and effective way.

Assessment method

Assessment in both theory and practice is continuous, assessed against national outcomes and generic and field competencies, with students required to demonstrate evidence of their achievement. A range of assessment of theory procedures is in place including assignments, seminar presentations, advanced notice examinations, online learning activities, case studies and portfolio work.

Entry requirements

To join this MSc you should have a degree equivalent to UK second class honours (2:2 or above) in a health-related subject. Other subjects may be considered on an individual basis. You will also need GCSEs at Grade C or Grade 4 or above (or equivalent) in English Language and Mathematics. Eligible candidates must provide evidence of study within the five years prior to application and be able to demonstrate relevant voluntary/work experience.
