If so, our exciting BA in TESOL & Linguistics (teaching English to speakers of other languages) could be the ideal course for you. This course will provide you with academic knowledge, practical skills and professional experience in preparation for a future in English language teaching, media or publishing sector. It will provide the tools and resources for you to reflect upon your professional practice, conduct your own research or continue with further studies in the field of linguistics. This course has modules relating to the use of English language and teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL) , which will help you to become qualified with a specialist subject expertise in English language and an internationally recognised teaching qualification. Completion of the course gives you a qualification that will allow you to apply for positions as an English Language teacher both in the UK and abroad. However, you will also benefit from a thorough exploration of English language, developing skills in critical thinking, written and spoken communication skills, and teaching practice. You will be taught by staff with many years of experience in the field of English language, English language teaching and teacher training. In addition, there are opportunities to teach English throughout your study to gain authentic experience of teaching learners of English. You will develop transferable skills, such as communication, research, time management, team working and problem-solving and these skills can lead to work in areas such as publishing, teaching, advertising and marketing. As part of this course, you will have the opportunity to complete the Trinity Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CertTESOL). Completing this will:

  • Provide you with an internationally recognised TESOL certificate
  • Offer you a route to work in schools, colleges and other settings across the globe
  • Equip you with practical teaching skills
  • You will also receive support and feedback from expert tutors and peers, becoming part of the worldwide TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) network

Qualification requirements

There is no formal requirement for UCAS points to join the Foundation Year. Applicants will be interviewed to ascertain their suitability for the Foundation Year. This may be undertaken by Skype or telephone where travel to Bishop Grosseteste University is not possible. The Foundation Year syllabus does not include any specific element of upskilling in English language. Entrants must be able to demonstrate a minimum level of competence in English language.
