What food is good for you? Why is blood red? How is disease transmitted? How do animals reproduce? What molecules are in your food? How is does the environment work? If you are asking questions like this and have a keen interest in biology, this course could be just for you. As a student on this course you will join our higher education community and be taught by highly experienced and professional lecturers. The course focus actively encourages independent, critical thinking and a mixture of group and individual work, allowing you to develop your understanding of key concepts, principles and practices in biology. Our HNC/HND focuses on equipping individuals with the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to succeed in or advance your employment in biologically-based industries or complete a top-up course at University . Through the study of mandatory core and relevant specialist units, learners will cover much of the underpinning knowledge, skills and understanding required for success progression into higher level study or entry into vocationally relevant employment. On completion of a HND you can top up your qualification to a full Bachelors degree at university or enter employment. The course opens up excellent career opportunities for those in and new to the industry Staff expertise Our HNC/D is taught in small groups, by well qualified and industry linked lecturers, with a wide range of industry backgrounds. The teaching team have adopted a hands-on, flexible learning approach to best familiarise you with industry and academic practice. Industry links Our close links to the science sector as a whole means that you will benefit from the knowledge and insight of industry experts and guest lecturers.

Modules

Learners will study a variety of units across the biological sciences giving a broad understanding a varied in the programme, which will give you the opportunity to develop skills and experience to succeed in biology. You will study units totalling 120 credits; Core Modules:

  • Unit 1 Fundamentals of Laboratory Techniques
  • Unit 2 Scientific Data Handling Approaches and Techniques
  • Unit 3 Regulation and Quality in the Applied Sciences
  • Unit 4 Cell Biology
  • Unit 5 Fundamentals of Chemistry
  • Unit 6 Anatomy and Human Physiology
Optional Modules:
  • Unit 10 Principles of Ecology and their Applications
- Unit 18 Microbiological Techniques

Assessment method

You will be assessed through course work, assessed laboratory practicals and externally marked course work by the awarding body.

Qualification requirements

You will need: 32-48 UCAS tariff points including a relevant science area OR Animal Management BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma OR Equivalent Level 3 qualification including A-Levels GCSEs in English, Maths & Science at Grade C or above. We also welcome students with relevant work experience.
