Course summary

Are you interested in working in the diverse events industry? If you have already completed a Foundation Degree in Events Management (or equivalent), this course allows you to progress onto Level 6 and gain a full honours degree. The BA (Hons) Events Management course offers a vocational pathway in higher education, allowing you to gain both an academic qualification and the knowledge and skills to work in tourism, whilst developing your managerial skills. The level 6 BA (Hons) in Events Management, continues to build on skills developed during level 4 and 5 foundation degree. The broad curriculum from foundation degree to the BA (Hons) degree covers all the main event and business disciplines and focuses on contemporary issues. The level 6 course will give the appropriate opportunity to continue to develop skills whilst applying these to resolve various problems encountered by organisations, including skills of analysis and interpretation which will be useful in subsequent career or future study. On completion of the course students will know about planning and controlling event activities, and will have the ability to apply knowledge to a wide range of scenarios and problems.

Modules

LEVEL 6 MODULES: Dissertation (40 credits, compulsory) In the dissertation module, students will research a topic that interests them. After proposing a title and conducting a literature review for the research proposal, students will put together a dissertation/research project. (Research Proposal 10%, Dissertation 90%) Strategic Management (20 credits, compulsory) This module aims to develop an appreciation of the 21st century internal and external environmental issues that affect strategic decision making within organisations. It will explore and develop evaluative skills in the use of frameworks as a tool for strategic decision making within business environments. (Exam 50%, Essay 50%) Ethics in Events, Hospitality and Tourism Industry (20 credits, compulsory) The ethics module aims to investigate and evaluate the principles and theories of ethics within events, tourism and hospitality contexts. Theories will be discussed and appraised in order to establish the value of their existence in today’s events, tourism and hospitality climates while both global and local influences will also be discussed in order to recognise the involvement of the various stakeholders within these contexts. (Essay 50%, Seminar/Research paper 30%, Presentation 20%) Contemporary Event Issues (20 credits, compulsory) This module will use innovative methods to engage students with theory of, industry standards and best practice in order to contribute to the ever-changing event industry. Students will critically reflect upon the on the benefits of keeping regularly informed of emerging trends and being inspired through reliable sources. Students will investigate current issues that are impacting on the event industry and disseminate their findings using a variety of methods. (Essay 30%, Case Study 40%, Group Debate Video 30%) Event Policy and Regulations (20 credits, compulsory) This module aims is to critique the relationship between events and public policy at the international, national, regional and local level and gain a firm understanding of the current health, safety and risk requirements within the sector. Students will appraise how and why governments and other agencies make event policy decisions with the aim of driving long-term inward investment. Students will examine the process of policy formation and the role of legislation and regulation of event delivery. In addition, students will critically evaluate the complexities of risk and health and safety. They will become familiar with organisational tools and techniques vital to this complex industry. (Seminar/Research paper 60%, Presentation 40%)

Qualification requirements

Entry onto level 6 will be direct for those progressing students from the GLlM Events Management Foundation Degree to the GLlM Events Management Bachelor Degree (Hons) after successful completion of the foundation degree. Entry onto level 6 from alternate institutions and programmes will be considered on an individual basis in line with GLlM credit transfer policy, based on previous successful study of 240 credits, 120 credits per level 4 and 5 in a compatible qualification (within the time frame outlined in the policy). Or by supporting their application with the submission of a portfolio for accreditation of prior learning (APL/APEL/RPEL), in accordance with GLlM regulations and policy. All places are subject to a satisfactory interview.

GCSE in Welsh or English as first language, grade C or above.
