On this course, you'll join a community of MA TESOL students at all stages of their careers, along with British Council-accredited English language teachers, experienced teacher educators, and leading researchers. You'll develop as a teacher and prepare for the next step in your career. How you learn: All our courses are designed around a set of key principles based on engaging you with the world, collaborating with others, challenging you to think in new ways, and providing you with a supportive environment in which you can thrive. Our lectures are timetabled so that you can attend university just two days a week. This allows you to balance the course with work and other commitments. Typical topics include English language teaching methodologies, how second languages are learned, teacher development and language analysis. All modules allow you to focus on specific areas in TESOL, such as English for Academic Purposes, Young Learners or Assessment, and the flexible research project encourages you to specialise in a research setting of your choice. You learn through

  • collaboration with a research supervisor
Applied learning Throughout the course, we support you in observations, reflections, planning and delivering teaching experiences. Whether you are new to teaching or have years of experience, our focus on teacher development will make a difference to your future career. *Learning Support * You can find help at every step of your journey with us. From guidance during registration and a thorough induction programme, to the excellent support from student services through Hallam Help and the award-winning International Student Experience team, you can always find assistance and encouragement. Regular classes for MA TESOL students to improve academic writing and speaking focus on the language and skills needed for your assignments. You will be assigned an academic tutor for the year and all modules offer one-to-one support from module leaders.

Entry requirements

An honours degree or equivalent. If English is not your first language we also require an IELTS score of 6.5 or above with a minimum of 6.0 in reading and writing. If your English language skill is currently below IELTS 6.5 we recommend you consider a Sheffield Hallam University Pre-sessional English course which will enable you to achieve an equivalent English score. If you do not have such academic qualifications we may consider your application individually, based on your personal, professional and work experience, and other formal qualifications. You may also be able to claim credit points which can reduce the amount of time it takes to complete your qualification at Sheffield Hallam.
