Course summary

This MA allows you to follow your passion for languages, communication and translation. Whether you are already working as a translator or are a languages student looking to specialise in translation, this course will give you the formal foundations for a language services career. It combines theoretical and practical training and you will be able to make use of our state of the art translation and interpreting facilities. Should your interests lie in interpreting, we have a specialised pathway that will allow you to develop particular skills in this area. You may choose to study up to three of the following languages; Arabic, English (compulsory) French, German, Portuguese, Russian, Serbian/Croatian or Spanish.

Modules

Over the duration of this course, you will study a range of modules (including language modules) and deliver a translation project. MODULES Audiovisual Translation: Accessibility - uncovers the theory and practice of translating for subtitling for the deaf/hard of hearing and audio description. Translator's Toolbox - explores computer assisted translation tools. Introduction to Translation Theory - examines different theoretical approaches to translation which have been prominent in the Western World. Translating Texts - introduces translation text types before giving you the opportunity to begin your own translations. Introduction to Interpreting (optional pathway) - this pathway allows you to study the different forms, modes and models of interpreting. TRANSLATION PROJECT Demonstrate your practical skills in a targeted translation project. If you wish this may take the form of a practical exercise undertaken during a placement with a public body or charity. LANGUAGE MODULES You will study a language of your choice from a wide selection of European and South-East Asian languages
