Course summary

For centuries, nation-states have typically interacted through two principal means: war and diplomacy. This interdisciplinary programme offers you the opportunity to explore these central elements of world history and contemporary affairs from the medieval period to the present. Delivered jointly by the Department of History and the Department of Politics, Philosophy and Religion, the programme allows you to gain an understanding of international relations from historical and theoretically informed perspectives. Subjects explored include the development of the interstate system, the evolution of warfare, and the contemporary theory and practice of international diplomacy. The programme is closely aligned with the Centre for War and Diplomacy, which provides access to talks from world-leading scholars and practitioners.
