Course summary

The European School of Osteopathy (ESO) is a leading osteopathic institution with a world-class reputation for high quality osteopathic education.   • our academic site, Boxley House, is set in a stunning location in an area of outstanding natural beauty
  • our well-established, dedicated teaching clinic provides students with hands-on experience, treating patients of all ages under the supervision of experienced osteopathic tutors
Maidstone itself is the bustling county town of Kent; less than an hour from London and mainland Europe but with lower living costs and access to stunning countryside and miles of beautiful coastline. Students of all ages, nationalities and backgrounds choose to study with the ESO and we pride ourselves on our inclusive and supportive community. With around 230 students, students never feel like an anonymous face in the crowd. The Master of Osteopathy (MOst) is our four-year, full-time undergraduate degree programme; as an integrated masters, it combines undergraduate and postgraduate level study into a single course. The purpose of the MOst degree is to graduate safe, competent osteopathic practitioners, eligible to register with the General Osteopathic Council and launch straight into a career as an osteopath, whether that be in private practice or as part of a larger healthcare setting. The ESO’s outstanding reputation and international links also provide opportunities for those looking to move into research or to practice and/or teach overseas. The ESO is part of the BCNO Group, with degree courses validated by the University of Plymouth. About The Course The course integrates scientific, anatomical, theoretical and research knowledge with applied osteopathic and naturopathic skills. Students spend up to 4 days per week attending online/face-to-face lectures and tutorials or in clinical training, where there is a tutor: student ratio of around 1:6. Our degree programme includes a broad range of techniques and approaches and a choice of electives in the final year; this enables students to treat patients of all ages and to gain valuable experience in an area of special interest before they graduate. Students can study in Kent or in London at the British College of Osteopathic Medicine; they may also choose to study across both sites, for example spending two years in Kent, the third in London before returning for their final year. This gives students access to a large team of experienced faculty and specialist tutors and a wider patient demographic. M.Ost - Osteopathy Curriculum The curriculum involves problem-based learning, case-based scenarios and research. The teaching clinic sits alongside practical skills classes, lectures, tutorials and online learning resources, which aims to develop clinical reasoning, student reflection and self-directed learning. Throughout the four years, students engage with evidence-based medicine and learn to evaluate and appraise evidence critically. Students are also taught business and practice management skills to equip them with the tools needed when working in an osteopathic practice. Students spend around 1000 hours in clinic during their osteopathic training, experiencing around fifty new patient interactions. Assessment The programme utilises a range of assessments. The assessments are designed to be stimulating and challenging, stretching the students’ knowledge and practical skills. Assessments include:

  • reflective accounts
  • ISCE (integrated standard clinical exam)
  • clinical assessments either as individual students or group work

Assessment method

The programme utilises a range of assessments. The assessments are designed to be stimulating and challenging, stretching the students' knowledge and practical skills. Assessments include essays, presentations, group work, reflective accounts, ISCE (integrated standard clinical exam), and clinical assessments either as individual students or group work. Successful students graduate from BCOM or ESO with a validated integrated Master degree in Osteopathy from the University of Plymouth.

Additional entry requirements

Criminal records declaration (DBS/Disclosure Scotland)

Students will be asked to undertake a Criminal Records Check. This will be via the DBS during the first week of the course. Overseas students need to provide a 'Certificate of good conduct. - details of how to obtain this is available from the school's Admissions Office upon application.

Health checks

All students will need to complete a health check prior to course begin, so that any support needs can be identified from the outset.

Interview

All offers are subject to interview. Interviews are arranged upon receipt of application, when we will contact candidates to arrange a mutual convenient time for this to take place. In some cases, for example, when an applicant comes from overseas, the interview can take place via Skype. Interviews are informal and should also be regarded as an opportunity for the applicant to ask questions about the course.

English language requirements

Your English will be assessed at interview, to which you will be invited following your application. If English is not your first language, you may be asked to obtain a formal English language qualification as a condition of your offer.
