Course summary

This unique course is aimed at people who want to join a ‘helping profession’ but who want to keep their career options wide open. The broad-based, multidisciplinary studies will be an excellent foundation for later training as a nurse, teacher, social worker, careers advisor, counsellor or any related role. Guidance and Counselling is a subject that is only offered by a select group of universities at undergraduate level. Our BA (Hons) Guidance and Counselling is unique in being accredited by the Career Development Institute, which is the UK-wide professional body for career guidance. Practical experience is an important element of the course. The Peer Mentoring Project will involve you in mentoring relationships throughout your time at Northumbria. Work placements are available for a full year between your second and final years, with the additional option of a placement module during your second year. Study abroad is also possible, with opportunities to study counselling in Portugal and social policies in Sweden.
