Course summary

Kickstart your entrepreneurial journey today with a media-savvy outlook with this hands-on, innovation-driven course. You will learn what it takes to start your own successful business or turbocharge an existing company, whether it is starting a production company, creative agency or online business, developing a product or service, or using media to widen your influence. You will be able to take your ideas from the classroom to the real world with practical modules designed to help you execute your goals. The course is designed to help you substitute current creative projects as coursework. This can include:

  • productions you work on as part of a wider team,
  • commissions and
  • ‘on spec’ blue sky projects.
We also encourage:
  • workflow innovation and
  • business development activities.
As a result, you can be flexible with your time spent on the course which allows you to attend University just one day a week during term time. For example, if you are working towards a clearer, more feasible and more profitable business this will be equivalent to participation in the course and will still enable you to receive feedback from experts and colleagues. The knowledge and skills gained on this course will help shape your identity as an independent media entrepreneur able to seize opportunities and navigate the terrain of an ever-changing media landscape. The course will help you bridge idea and ambition, offering insight and strategy to execute your business plan with flair. You will learn how to set yourself apart in a competitive market and explore market research, Intellectual Property (IP) development, commissioning and delivery. This MA is run in collaboration with the Westmont Enterprise Hub, providing an additional layer of business expertise, innovation potential and connection points to disruptive incubators. With freelance and commissioning contracts dominating the industry, you will learn how to thrive as a freelancer, self-employed contractor or independent production company. To prepare you for this business environment, you will work on projects, collaborate with peers who tackle similar challenges, learn to pitch credibly, and receive feedback from industry specialists. This real-world experience is essential for helping you create impactful work for clients as well as develop an agile business approach. You will be taught by experts from a range of specialist backgrounds who share a passion for media, creativity and entrepreneurship. Alongside lectures, workshops and one-to-one tutorials, our regular talks from high-profile industry speakers will inspire and give you an opportunity to see how knowledge is applied in the industry to lead successful ventures and inspire. Past speakers have included award-winning filmmakers, distributors, broadcasters and other leading media decision-makers such as Jeffrey Katzenberg (Disney, Dreamworks, Quibi), graphic designer Kate Moross (Ustwo) as well as Oscar winner and UWL alumni Rebecca Harris. On completion of the course you should have a project portfolio that may include a prototype, business plan and pitch deck ready to be launched or being commissioned. Most importantly, you should emerge a well-rounded and resilient media producer with astute knowledge on how to steer your business onto a path of success.


Entry requirements

The minimum requirement will be a 2:1 pass at undergraduate level from an appropriate course. For returning students a 2:2 plus a relevant industry portfolio could be considered, the portfolio criteria may also apply for non-graduates with relevant industry experience. An interview is required.
