Course summary

Our research activities cover fundamental investigations to applied research. Many of these activities are in conjunction with industry and other universities. Join a department with a strong ethos to proactively better the world through taking mechanical engineering research and development to the next level. Our research activities cover fundamental investigations to applied research, and are often carried out collaboratively with industry and other universities. Your PhD can be in any of the areas of research covered by our research centres:

  • Centre for Bioengineering & Biomedical Technologies
  • Centre for Climate Adaptation & Environment Research (CAER)
  • Centre for Digital, Manufacturing & Design (DMADE)
  • Centre for Integrated Materials, Processes & Structures (IMPS)

  • Institute for Propulsion & Mobility (IPM)

Research content Successful applicants are welcomed very much as junior academic colleagues rather than students, and are expected to play a full and professional role in contributing to the Department’s objective of international academic excellence. In many cases postgraduate projects are linked to industrial companies and are often carried out in collaboration with other departments within the University and other institutions. Postgraduates thus have the opportunity to work on interdisciplinary projects with a strong industrial relevance as well as on more fundamental engineering topics. The dissemination of research findings is seen as a vital component of the research process and graduate students are encouraged to prepare papers for publication as part of their research training. Professional Development Professional development is a crucial element of doctoral study, not only in supporting your research but also as part of your longer term career development. Assessment description The MPhil programme combines taught research training and applied research practice. Candidates join the Department as a member of the Research Centre in which they initially have a broad research interest and that will have overseen their acceptance into the Department. Candidates are expected to carry out supervised research at the leading edge of their chosen subject, which must then be written up as a substantial thesis. The final stage of the MPhil programme is the oral or viva voce examination, in which students are required to defend the thesis to a Board of Examiners.

Entry requirements

First or good second class honours degree (or equivalent) in an appropriate engineering, science or mathematics subject. English Language requirements - IELTS: 6.5 overall with no less than 6.0 in all components - The Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic): 62 with no less than 59 in any element - TOEFL IBT: 90 overall with a minimum 21 in all 4 components You will need to get your English language qualification within 24 months prior to starting your course. If you need to improve your English language skills before starting your studies, you may be able to take a pre-sessional course to reach the required level.
