With a focus on Latin America, this five-year programme will develop your Spanish language skills and add in-depth knowledge of the literature, culture and history of the 19 Spanish-speaking Latin American countries. Spanish and Latin American Studies at Aberdeen has an outstanding reputation, with the highest possible rating of ‘Excellent’ in the last national Teaching Quality Assessment. Aberdeen is one of the most dynamic place to study and research the Spanish language and the cultural frameworks in countries where it is spoken. Spanish is the second most widely spoken language after English in the western hemisphere and is currently spoken by 350 million native Spanish speakers including 19 Latin American countries. Not only is it the second language in many parts of the USA, but Spanish is also the fastest growing modern language in the UK. You will grow your skills in Spanish - whether starting as a beginner or advanced - and you will explore the history, films, visual culture, literature and politics of Latin America, taught by experts internationally recognised as leaders in their fields. As an integral part of your 4-year programme, you will spend half of year three developing your language skills as a teaching assistant or visiting student in a Spanish-speaking country. Our graduates are highly sought-after and have a wide choice, including careers like teaching and translating which draw directly on their subject. Modules
At Aberdeen, you will study the social, political and cultural matters of Spain and Latin America. You will develop advanced communication skills that will help you prepare for careers in a wide variety of industries. Throughout the programme, you will study topics such as Latin American and Spanish history, literature, visual culture, society and anthropology and History and Thought.
Assessment method
Students are assessed by any combination of three assessment methods: Coursework such as essays and reports completed throughout the course; Practical assessments of the skills and competencies they learn on the course; Written examinations at the end of each course. The exact mix of these methods differs between subject areas, years of study and individual courses. Honours projects are typically assessed on the basis of a written dissertation.

There is no formal requirement for entry to the Spanish beginners' course. Students who already have a qualification in Spanish sit a placement test to determine the language course appropriate to them. All students, whether beginners or with a qualification such as Higher grade, can proceed to Honours, subject to satisfactory performance at levels 1 and 2.
