This course is subject to revalidation This two-year course is suitable for entry to a career in analytical science (e.g. quality control in chemical refineries, environmental studies, healthcare diagnostics) or forensic science (e.g. crime scene analysis, forensic analysis of evidence, DNA fingerprinting). Students can complete a BSc in Forensic Science by studying for an extra year at USW in addition to the FdSc. The course contains traditional chemical, biological and analytical science with case studies and examples taken from forensic science, criminalistics and DNA analysis. Specialist units cover crime scene analysis, forensic psychology and criminology. The course is delivered through lectures, practical demonstrations, simulations, tutorials and role playing. Assessment is through exams, practical write-ups, reports, presentations and practical abilities at crime scenes.
Year 1 (Level 4): • the forensic sciences • crime scene investigation science • cellular and molecular biology • key skills for analytical and forensic scientists • organic chemistry and health and safety • physical and inorganic chemistry Year 2 (Level 5): • biochemistry and biotechnology • practical skills in forensics and bioanalysis • forensic evidence and the legal system • analytical chemistry (studied at University of South Wales) • work related project
The course is laboratory based and assessment is through exams, practical write-ups, reports, presentation and practical abilities at crime scenes.
