Course summary

Structure Christ the Redeemer’s undergraduate programmes combine academic study and practice. The BA in Theology programmes prepares students for future leadership and ministry roles (in church or community-based settings) through developing their knowledge and understanding of Christian theology and enabling them to apply that knowledge in a professional / ministry context. It also seeks to develop their capacity for leadership and for working collaboratively and to have acquired the academic skills necessary for successful completion of the programme at level 6 and for future postgraduate study. The programme is based around five pathways: Ministerial leadership; Counselling; Entrepreneurship; Media Culture; and Youth Ministry and Music. At level 5 there is compulsory placement module, which can be extended through students undertaking the work-based research project at level 6. Pathway Overview This pathway is for those who are interested in combining theological education with the study of business and entrepreneurship. The pathway has been developed due to demand from many students seeking to pursue Christian ministry for exposure to the discipline of business studies, particularly as this relates to both organisational leadership (in both church and secular settings) and social enterprise where business models are blended with social, environmental and/or faith-based objectives. Content Through this programme students engage with theology, biblical studies, ministry studies and one of the five pathway options (outlined above) as well as the academic competencies required of higher education programmes. Students develop their self-awareness, understanding of community and contemporary culture, which when combined with opportunities for work-based learning enables them to develop and extend their leadership capacity. Students progressively develop knowledge, understanding, skills and behaviours and critically reflect of their personal formation and development, including through the application of a range of Personal Development Planning (PDP) approaches. The programme is compliant with the National Occupational Standards for the role of Church Minister which is approved by the Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education and recognised by a range of Christian denominations in the UK. Skills Upon successful completion of the programme, students will have developed a portfolio of experiences, learning and skills, and have extended their capacity as leaders and competency in the professional practice linked to their chosen study pathway. They are also able to communicate effectively in a range of written and presentation forms, reflecting critically on their own ministry practice and that of others, and having the ability to think and work independently.
