Course summary

The MRC Epidemiology Unit is a research department in the School of Clinical Medicine at the University of Cambridge and investigates the causes and prevention of obesity and diabetes. Our PhD students have the opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research under the supervision of senior scientists supported by postdoctoral researchers and a large team of fieldworkers, data managers, statisticians, study coordinators, technical and administrative staff. Students become members of one of the University’s Colleges and are trained at the MRC Epidemiology Unit at the Cambridge Biomedical Campus.

Entry requirements

Applicants for this course should have achieved a UK Good II.i Honours Degree. The MRC Epidemiology Unit offers a three-year PhD programme for those students who already have a master's degree or equivalent training in an appropriate scientific discipline. Opportunities also exist for four-year positions for those wishing to undertake the MPhil in Population Health Sciences course in the first year of their studentship. The academic requirement for entry is a first or upper second-class degree or equivalent. Note that applicants who apply to take the MPhil course as a precursor to the PhD must pass the MPhil and make a separate application to continue to the PhD (i.e. continuation is not automatic).
