Build, Code, Play. Be the future of Games. If you want to design and create the future of Game Development, this degree will give you the creative and technical foundation to make your mark. The BA (Hons) Game Design (Game Development) programme equips you with the skills, confidence, and industry insight needed to stand out as a professional artist in the games sector. Throughout your studies, you’ll explore the core principles of C# Programming, how to program within Unreal Blueprints, and Game AI. You’ll develop a strong grounding in Unity, C#, C++, Game AI, and building advanced game systems, gaining hands-on experience in industry-standard tools and workflows used by studios around the world. As you progress, you’ll build a deep understanding of the games industry, production pipelines, and collaborative development, working in simulated studio environments that mirror real-world professional practice. You’ll also study the theory of play, player experience, and visual storytelling, helping you to design artwork that not only looks great but enhances gameplay and narratives. Each year of the course is designed to expand your creativity and technical skillset, preparing you to take ownership of your programming pipelines. By your final year, you’ll have the opportunity to specialise in your chosen discipline, whether that’s Gameplay, AI, Systems or UX and create a curated, professional portfolio that showcases who you are. By the time you graduate, you’ll be ready to step confidently into the industry, equipped with the skills, technical knowledge, and creative vision needed to shape the next generation of games.

Assessment method
Throughout the course, you’ll be assessed in a variety of ways, from written work and presentations to hands-on practical projects. The type of assessment will depend on the module you’re studying. For example, in theory modules such as Game Design Principles, you’ll focus more on research and academic work, such as writing essays and producing detailed design documentation. The more practical modules, however, will focus on the creation and development of your work, showcasing your skills, development and presentation over time. In your group development modules, you’ll work as part of a team to create a game project, just like in a real studio, where you will not only be assessed on your projects, but your ability to critically evaluate and reflect upon the development process. Knowing how to make games is one thing, but understanding why your game succeeded or failed will only serve to strengthen your skillset as a Game Developer. Across all modules, you’ll be encouraged to develop problem-solving, critical thinking, and reflective skills, qualities that are essential for anyone looking to make a career in the games industry, especially at a professional or AAA level.

Qualification requirements
UCAS Tariff - 80 points
Standard offer Applicants will require 80 UCAS points in a Games Design or Computing related subject, or 60 Access-to-HE Credits (of which a minimum of 45 must be at Level 3). Applicants are required to hold English (or equivalent) at Grade D/3, and Maths GCSE (or equivalent) at Grade C/4. Non-standard offer Non-standard entry is intended to support students who may not meet the standard academic entry requirements of a HE programme, normally level 3 qualifications which attract UCAS points (for instance A-levels or BTEC level 3 courses). An applicant must be able to demonstrate recent work/experience/interest in the Games or adjacent sector which would give them skills and knowledge comparable to applicants with Level 3 qualifications. If they can not do this, a small portfolio of work which showcases their talent and interest in Game Development, either of Gameplay, AI NPCs, or Level Design. All such non-standard applicants will be interviewed, set an appropriate piece of work and a judgement made taking into account their academic potential and relevant work/experience.
