Course summary
The course is distinctive in its multidisciplinary approach and breadth. Teaching takes the form of lectures and seminars in theory, politics, history, economics, law, security and various regional and area studies, as well as individual thesis supervision. The taught part of the course aims to familiarise you with the range and variety of disciplines required for a thorough critical understanding of the field in all its complexity and of the means and methods that have been devised to understand it better.
Modules
Year 1: international relations of the modern middle east; politics of peace, conflict and violence in africa; the cold war; china in the international system; gender, war and security; international migration and development; democratisation; issues in international law; american presidents and foreign policy; international political economy; european integration; european geopolitics from the end of the second world war; the global governance of financial crime. Year 2: research and write a 25,000-word dissertation on a topic of their choice.
Assessment method
Dissertation: 25,000 words maximum (including tables, footnotes, and appendices, but excluding bibliography). Students must attend all sessions of their 6 option modules, but will assessed on 3 modules by either: 2 essays not exceeding 2,000 words each; or 1 essay not exceeding 4,000 words; or written examination. Compulsory core course examination paper written under examination conditions of 3 hours' duration.
Entry requirements
Applicants are expected to have either an Honours degree (at the UK standard of a good 2.1), a grade point average of 3.7 or higher, or to produce evidence of relevant and equivalent experience and their fitness to read for a Master's degree. Applicants whose 1st language is not English should have an IELTS score of 7.5 (a minimum of 7.0 in each individual component).
