Understand the challenges, complexities and rewards of inclusive practice. You’ll develop the knowledge and skills required to be a practitioner in this area. As part of this course, you'll:

  • Develop your identity as an emerging practitioner
  • Work with children and young people across the 3-18-year age range within mainstream and specialist settings
  • Begin to develop ideas to promote inclusion for all learners
  • Use a psychological perspective to explore how children learn
  • Identify how to support children’s needs through best practice and overcoming barriers to participation
  • Learn how to create inclusive and enabling environments
  • Investigate the importance of whole-school approaches when working with displaced children who have experienced trauma
  • Work with stakeholders including families, education, health, and care services in educational settings to understand the policy and practice behind their collaboration
  • Explore key issues in safeguarding to understand best practice
Find Out More Your learning You’ll understand what it means to celebrate diversity and support children with Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND). Your modules will enable you to consider a range of social, economic, political and cultural issues that have shaped the education system over time and impacted children’s life chances. A global perspective Investigating associated research and practices from around the world, you’ll identify global perspectives on current issues. You’ll explore topics such as mental health and wellbeing, and you’ll document your findings in a literature review for your dissertation. Your research experience will draw on the creative arts to investigate and explore how to engage and empower specific learners. A specialist academic community You’ll join a cutting-edge community of like-minded peers and teaching experts in the Carnegie School of Education. This will include Research Centres for LGBTQ+ Inclusion, Excellence for Mental Health in Schools, and Race, Education and Decoloniality. Our specialist team draws together academics and industry professionals who continue to shape and influence policy in education. Professional experiences Through professional experiences and work-related activities, you’ll have the opportunity to attend both mainstream and wider educational settings. This could include specialist schools and charitable organisations, either in the UK or abroad. You’ll reflect upon your experience from both settings as part of your module assessment. Employability Guest lectures and networking events will further refine your knowledge, enabling you to learn from researchers and people working in the field.
