Course summary

Please check the Sheffield Hallam University website for the latest information. Course summary:

  • Study your foundation year, then progress to a degree with industry accreditation from the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM).
  • Understand marketing and its role in business and the wider domestic and global economy.
  • Focus on your interests and gain valuable experience.
Develop your intellectual abilities and analytical skills. By the end of the course you will have gained skills in quantitative and qualitative information collection, analysis, synthesis and interpretation. How you learn: All our courses are designed around a set of key principles based on engaging you with the world, collaborating with others, challenging you to think in new ways, and providing you with a supportive environment in which you can thrive. The course is suitable if you don't meet the entry requirements for our BA (Hons) Business and Marketing course, or you want extra preparation before starting degree-level study. You share the first year with other Sheffield Business School foundation year students, then move on to the degree. The approaches taken vary between modules as appropriate for the subject material and the required learning outcomes. You learn through
  • formal lectures
  • seminars
  • problem solving exercises
  • case studies
  • individual and group presentations
  • directed learning activities
In the foundation year, you'll study wider business topics, while specialising in your chosen subject area. You'll learn useful skills such as academic writing, work in diverse teams and learn to utilise a wide variety of data sources. In doing so, you'll fully prepare yourself for undergraduate study. Applied learning Work placements In year four, you have the opportunity to apply the skills you've gained by taking a one-year paid work placement. This is a great way to improve your industry knowledge with real insight and experience. It also enables you to build an eye-catching CV to impress future employers, and many students find jobs with their placement companies after graduating. Due to our strong relationships with regional, national and international employers, we can help you to secure a great placement opportunity and support you while you are there. Salaries of up to £22,000 are possible. If you study abroad, or do your work placement, in another European country there may be funding available through the Erasmus+ programme (until 2023) or the Turing Scheme. Live projects We run a programme of guest lectures so that you can benefit from the insight and experiences of industry specialists from a range of organisations and backgrounds. Networking opportunities Prepare for your career through the marketing student society, which you gain automatic membership to as a new student. This gives you access to the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) and local branch master classes and activities. We are one of the few universities in the UK to have a student society linked to the CIM. This is a student learning community that complements and enhances academic learning and links you to local professionals. CIM is the leading professional body for marketers worldwide and exists to develop the marketing profession, maintain professional standards and improve the skills of marketing practitioners. Sheffield Hallam University has joined forces with CIM to give students the opportunity to gain professional qualifications through CIM Graduate Gateway. CIM qualifications are highly sought after by employers, and map alongside our own degrees which ensures we are equipping you with the best opportunities for a successful marketing career.
