Our Applied Nutrition course is an interdisciplinary program aligned with the core competencies of the Association for Nutrition (AfN). It encompasses medical, nutritional, social, psychological and exercise sciences. You will be guided through your study journey with us by an active research teaching team who have diverse expertise. Course overview Our MSc Applied Nutrition program addresses a rising demand for well-trained nutritional professionals in health education, nutrition and community health work. As high nutrition-related disease such as cardiovascular issues, type-2 diabetes and certain cancers persist, the importance of combating these, while enhancing immune function, cognitive well-being and mental health is paramount. The programme is interdisciplinary programme consisting of elements of medical sciences, nutritional sciences, social and psychological sciences, exercise and nutrition and the humanities. It aims to enable you to acquire knowledge, as well as skills to apply that knowledge to practice in a variety of settings. This programme will also provide you with many transferable skills to prepare you for a career after graduation. The programme is for students or professionals at both healthcare and the general public settings who have a passion on nutrition and who want to pursuit a career path in nutrition related workplaces and/or want to enhance their knowledge and skills to booster their careers.

Assessment method

Students registering can choose to this programme as full-time or part-time, in-person or online. The programme will be delivered via hybrid teaching technology that allows in-person students attending a lecture, seminar, or workshop as normal in a classroom, while online students join virtually from home using tools like Teams or Zoom, engage in synchronous learning. This teaching mode maximises interaction among students regardless of study modes. There are 2-3 laboratory sessions within specific modules. Online students will receive asynchronous laboratory sessions via Moodle (our online learning platform at City) and will be provided hand-out materials with illustrated pictures and videos to consolidate their learning. Drop-in sessions will be scheduled to discuss any queries arising from these sessions. Both study modes compromise of self-directed study in your own time, using reading lists, engaging Forum discussions on Moodle, and other resources (teaching materials, videos, trainings, journal clubs, nutrition society membership etc.) Our diverse assessments fit different learning styles, including formative assessment (quizzes or tests; engaging forums; taking specific training course, tasks shared and discussed with peers etc.) and summative assessment (exam, essay, case study, oral presentation, secondary data analysis, project dissertation).


Entry requirements

UK Applicants to this programme will normally be expected to have (or be about to attain) at least a second-class honours degree or equivalent in a related scientific subject, including: Clinical/Life sciences Health and Wellbeing Nursing Psychology Nutrition Food Science Neuroscience Sport & Exercise Science from a recognised institution of higher education.
