Course summary

The over-arching aim of the programme is to produce well-educated and highly-skilled graduates who are able to work effectively within all contexts of primary and secondary mainstream and special education. It is a requirement of the programme that all participants will be working in an education setting or participate in a meaningful placement of not less than sixteen hours per week. A significant proportion of the programme is work-based with students completing modules at work with the support of college staff. This model of full-time learning at work and academic study allows students to remain in employment while completing their qualification. This programme is delivered according to current University of Roehampton regulations for undergraduate degrees.

Modules

Students will study the following Level 6 compulsory modules: - Comparative Education Studies (20 credits) This module provides an introduction to comparative and international education studies. Students will consider the reasons why educational systems across the world differ, offering an understanding of the theoretical questions into the nature and functioning of educational systems and the complex relationships between society, culture, and education with a view to gaining a more critical and wider perspective on their own working context. Working with the Wider School Community (20 credits) This module focuses on the importance of developing a critical understanding of the education sector and the role of the educator within this, upholding public trust in the sector and maintaining high standards of ethics and professionalism. Equality and Diversity in Education (20 credits) This module is designed to develop a secure understanding of issues surrounding the work undertaken to promote and develop equality in education within schools. Assumptions and unconscious ideologies, prejudice, stereotypes and discrimination will be explored and challenged. Dissertation (60 credits) This module focuses on the importance of the ability to plan a research project having due regard to ethical principles, time management, systematic analysis of data, sustained argument and a synthesised conclusion and recommendations. The module aims for students to plan and conduct ethical research within the student’s workplace or within the general field of education, with supervision: this may be practical or theoretical.

Assessment method

The course provides opportunities to test understanding of the subject informally before completing the formal assessments that count towards the final mark. The Formal Assessment methods include an essay, a professional review, a staff development tool with rationale and a Dissertation report. The grades from formal assessments count towards your module mark. The assessments are spread across the year to make the workload manageable.

Qualification requirements

If you have achieved a qualification such as a foundation degree or HND, or have gained credit at another higher education institution, you may be able to enter at level 6. Evidence of AP(E)L (original certificate and academic transcript) will need to be presented to and accepted by the University of Roehampton.
