Course summary

Kingston Maurward is excited to be able to offer the BTEC Higher National in Public Services to develop students as professional, self-reflecting individuals able to meet the demands of employers in the public services sector and adapt to a constantly changing world. The objectives of the BTEC Higher Nationals in Public Services are as follows: ● to equip students with public service skills, knowledge and the understanding necessary to achieve high performance in the global public services environment ● to provide education and training for a range of careers in public services, including, for example, local government, Civil Service, public administration, the armed forces, police force, fire and rescue services, ambulance (not paramedic), prison service and the charity and voluntary sector ● to provide insight and understanding into the diversity of roles within public services, recognising the importance of collaboration at all levels ● to provide opportunities for students to enter or progress in employment in public services, or progress to higher education qualifications such as an Honours degree in Criminology, Policing, Applied Social Sciences, Public Services Management or a related area ● to support students to understand the local, regional and global context of public services and, for those students with a global outlook, to aspire to international career pathways ● to provide students with opportunities to address contemporary issues facing the industry, and society at large, with particular emphasis on sustainability and the environment, recognising the role that public services plays in addressing these issues to offer students the chance of career progression in their chosen field, with particular emphasis on achieving management-level positions ● to provide students with opportunities to engage in an industry-recognised apprenticeship scheme that aligns with their employer’s needs and their own career aspirations ● to provide students with the context in which to consider professional ethics and their relation to personal, professional and statutory responsibilities within the industry.

Organisational Structures and Culture Mental Health and Wellbeing Equality Diversity and Fair Treatment Public Services in Contemporary Society Project Management Government and Politics and other suitable option units Second year modules include: Research Project Reflective Professional Practice Operations and Project Management Understanding and Leading Change Plus additional optional units

Assessment method

Assessment will be through written assessments, presentations, portfolios and practical assessments.
