Our BA Primary Education with QTS is a dynamic 3-year undergraduate Initial Teacher Education degree. We are an Ofsted 'Outstanding' Institute of Education, committed to developing outstanding teachers with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to thrive in the classroom. You will be equipped to enable all children to grow and learn, ready to respond to the reality of contemporary education. Course Highlights

Learning Style You are taught primarily through a combination of lectures and seminars, allowing opportunities to discuss and develop your understanding of topics covered in lectures in groups. In addition to the formally scheduled contact time, you are encouraged to access academic support from staff within the course team and the wide range of services available to you within the University. Your work on campus is enhanced and developed through a series of school placements and Intensive Training and Practice (ITAP) weeks, where you will develop a reflective approach to your practice and the ability to work flexibly, responsively, and effectively in the classroom. Facilities Our extensive range of resources are available to you. Many curriculum and specialist modules have opportunities for you to spend time in local schools, which ensures you have an opportunity to make connections between theory and practice. The taught elements of the course take place on campus in Winchester. Our Connections We work closely with over 400 schools in the region, from large urban schools to village schools serving diverse communities. Our extensive network of schools provides you with a variety of school experiences where you will apply what you have learned on campus, deepen your understanding of critical theories, and refine your practice. Historically, Teachers and Senior Leaders from our Partnership schools contribute to the programme, from recruitment to preparation to be Early Career Teachers, to ensure the University supports ongoing teacher development. Many local Headteachers and Deputy Headteachers are historically Winchester graduates.

Entry requirements for advanced entry (i.e. into Year 2 and beyond)

Applicants who wish to apply for advanced standing (exemption from part of a programme) based on previous study are considered on an individual basis. Applicants are required to provide transcripts. confirming the module titles and grades they have already achieved, as well as module handbooks and/or programme specifications showing the learning outcomes of the modules completed.

International applicants

We accept a wide range of non-UK qualifications and use UK NARIC (National Recognition Information Centre) guidelines to confirm their equivalence.

Entry requirements

Qualification requirements

The Department for Education has withdrawn the requirement for applicants to complete literacy and numeracy Skills Tests. During the selection process and as part of your training, you will be required to demonstrate competency in Fundamental skills in English and mathematics. Applicants are required to hold a minimum of 2 x A-level or equivalent qualifications (e.g. 2 x BTEC National Subsidiary Diplomas) and we accept all A-level subjects, including Critical Thinking, General Studies and own-language A-levels. We welcome applicants who have completed the Extended Project (EP/EPQ) and points obtained from this qualification will be included in any offer. In addition, we accept a maximum of 32 points from level 3 qualifications below A2 that are included in the tariff (e.g. AS-levels not studied at A-level, music or dance qualifications). If you are a mature student, your application will be considered on its individual merits and work or other professional experience may be taken into consideration in lieu of other published requirements.

Criminal records declaration (DBS/Disclosure Scotland)

Applicants to this course are expected to obtain Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) clearance prior to beginning the course at the University. Our Admissions Team will be in contact with further information about when and how to obtain this clearance after an offer has been accepted. Please note, the cost of the check is covered by the applicant. If you have already have a DBS check and are signed up to the Update Service we will ask you to provide the original DBS certificate after an offer has been accepted. If you have lived or travelled abroad in the past five years, we will also need you to apply for an Overseas Criminal Records check for each country in which you have spent six months or more.

Health checks

Applicants to this course will undergo an occupational health assessment to ensure that they are fit to teach. Our Admissions Team will be in contact with further information about when and how to obtain this clearance after an offer has been accepted.

Interview

Applicants to this course are expected to attend an interview at the University. Our Admissions Team will be in contact with further information about the format of the interview if your application is shortlisted.

Other

We will look for evidence of a commitment to the teaching profession, an understanding of professional requirements, and an awareness of current educational issues in an application. Prior experience in a school is not required, however prospective students may find experience in a school useful for obtaining insights into the primary education classroom. Experience in a school or similar setting may also provide reassurance to prospective students that teaching is the right choice for their career. Applicants will be expected to complete a period of two weeks school experience after interview, and prior to joining the programme.
