Course summary

Keen to pursue a career within sixth forms or Further Education colleges? Or perhaps you see yourself within adult education or informal education roles. The course focuses on training to teach within the lifelong learning (post-14) sector (comprising offender learning, further education, adult education, training organisations and adult community learning to name just a few). Lifelong Learning Pre-service is open to anyone; you don’t need previous teaching experience. Instead, you’ll require: • an industry skill [a minimum Level 3 qualification in your specialist area]. • an appropriate entry qualification • a passion for teaching and training others. Why Study Lifelong Learning Cert Ed pre-service? You can choose to study for one year full-time – and upon successful completion of the course – you’ll be eligible to proceed to gain Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) status. This is following a process of professional formation through the Society for Education and Training. QTLS is the full professional status for teachers in the Lifelong Learning sector. You’ll focus on your subject specialist area, alongside general teaching in the lifelong learning sector. You can also secure a placement with one of our partnership institutions, where you’ll: • observe experienced teachers • gain practical hands-on experience • benefit from one-to-one mentoring. You can access our professional and academic network on this teacher training course. Following completion, 98.4 per cent† of postgraduates are in work and/or further study within 15 months of graduating. You may apply for a teaching role in the FE and Skills sector, which consists of a range of provider types. †HESA Graduate Outcomes 2018/19, UK domiciled

Modules

Year 1 modules include: • Research Informed Teaching, Learning and Assessment • Becoming a Subject Specialist Teacher • Being a Subject Specialist Teacher • Policy and Professional Issues. Assessment method

You can concentrate on your own subject area, and you’ll be required to embed core subjects including English, Maths, Digital Literacies and Special Education Needs and Disability (SEND) into your teaching and learning. You can gain experience of learning and teaching, with on-campus learning including lectures, seminars, tutorials, and interactive workshops. Your personal tutor will support your wellbeing. Assessments include essays, seminars, and presentations; your module specification/course handbook provides the complete assessment criteria.

Entry requirements

Qualification requirements

No prior teaching experience is needed. The course is particularly suitable if you have work experience in industry, business and administration, hair and beauty, social work, health service, uniformed services or armed forces. In addition to the University’s general minimum entry requirements you must also: * have either a HNC, CGLI Advanced, NVQ level 3/4 or recognised professional qualification * be able to demonstrate appropriate work experience in the area you wish to teach * have Level 2 Maths and English In addition you must also: * provide an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check and health clearances * provide two satisfactory references * complete a satisfactory interview We also offer this course at professional graduate (honours) and postgraduate (masters) if you hold a degree (or recognised equivalent). If your first language is not English, you will need to meet the minimum requirements of an English Language qualification. The minimum for IELTS is 6.0 overall with no element lower than 5.5, or equivalent.
