Reasons to choose Archaeology with Education at Lampeter UWTSD include: 1. On the archaeology side we offer a wide choice of different modules and topics to choose, that provide students with practical fieldwork experience, laboratory bases courses, as well as an understanding of key theoretical approaches in the discipline. On the Classical Civilisation side we provide the opportunity to study a wide array of topics and themes relating to mythology and religion, literature and art, and social, political and economic history. 2. All students taught through small groups, with interactive lectures, one-to-one tutorials, and seminars – we also offer covering laboratory based learning, including the analysis of soil, pollen, and bones. 3. Work placement opportunities with local archaeology trusts, CADW, National Trust and so on. 4. Staff with teaching and research expertise in a wide international area. 5. Students have the opportunity to go on local and international field trips to places such as Rome and Athens.
Archaeology is the study of the human past through an examination of physical remains such as stone tools, pottery and bones, through to buildings, structures, monuments and landscapes. It attempts to reveal how both contemporary societies and past societies are organised, how humanity interacts with the environments and landscapes, and how ideas about the world are visible in the objects people have created. On the Classical Civilisation side you get to study a wide range of modules covering not only fascinating historical figures like the Athenian statesmen Pericles, well-known military leaders like Alexander the Great and Julius Caesar, as well as historical "boogy-men" like the Emperor Nero – but also the great literary output of these worlds – the Homeric epics, the tragedies, Cicero – as well as basic aspects of everyday life, such as the role of women, religion, warfare and the economy.
A wide range of assessment methods are utilised. In addition to traditional gobbet work, essays and in class tests, you will be assessed through bibliographic exercises, presentations – oral and PowerPoint based, at both individual and group level – creation of abstracts, reflective reports, in-house conference papers, article reviews, take-home exams, group wikis, creation of project plans and, of course, the dissertation. This variety of assessment helps develop skills in presenting material in a clear, professional and lucid manner, whether orally or in writing. This breadth of assessment type creates variety in the student experience, allowing you to explore the subject in different ways, and also embeds within the Classical Civilisation programme the specific employability skills desired, indeed required, by employers today.
