Course summary

This programme prepares you for a career as an educator in professional practice. It has been developed in response to demand from our local NHS trust and private healthcare providers. It uses the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) standards for learning and assessment as its framework. You will develop your skills and knowledge so that you can facilitate and coordinate learning activities in practice settings with other like-minded professionals from a range of healthcare backgrounds. You can also develop your career as a leader of education environments. The programme can be the first step towards a PG Dip or MSc in Education and Leadership. Students will usually have prior experience as a mentor or assessor, as well as evidence of academic study within the past five years. However, all applications will be considered on individual merit.

Assessment method

The programme offers blended study between the Hull campus and online learning. The two theory modules are based around themed study days covering practice; establishing effective working relationships; evidence-based practice; leadership; creating an environment for learning; facilitation of learning; assessment and accountability and evaluation of learning. The work-based module offers the opportunity to explore an educational issue within your own sphere of practice. Learning methods include workshops, discussions, group work and lead lectures – enabling you to play an active part in your learning. All learning and teaching activities are supported by our virtual learning environment. There are no optional modules for this stage of the programme. If you want to register for the Postgraduate Diploma or MSc programme, your programme leader will help you to choose the best options. A popular pathway is to complete additional modules in leadership and complete a PG Dip or MSc Health Studies.
