Summary: This degree includes an integrated foundation year for you if you don’t have the appropriate subjects and/or grades for direct entry to year 1 of the degree. The foundation year helps you develop your knowledge in mathematics and other important subjects to enable you to proceed confidently through the remainder of the programme. Course details: Whether your passion is large- or small-scale machines and mechanisms, you can look forward to applying what you learn to areas as diverse as energy and aerospace. Mechanical engineering plays a central role in automotive design, robotics, manufacturing and mechatronics – you may also work in aerospace, medicine and marine engineering. Skilled engineers are highly sought. Starting salaries for graduate mechanical engineers can be as high as £28,000, increasing to £60,000+ when a senior level is reached (prospects.ac.uk 2015). Assessment method

You must attend a range of lectures and problem-solving tutorials. You also complete laboratory work to underpin the engineering principles studied. A series of laboratory-based activities provide you with a practical introduction to a range of engineering disciplines. The programme provides a number of contact teaching and assessment hours including lectures, tutorials, laboratories and projects. You must also complete self-study by reviewing lecture notes, completing assignments and projects and revising for assessments. Each 20 credit module typically has around 200 hours of learning time. In most cases around 60 hours will be spent in lectures, tutorials and laboratories. The remaining learning time is for you to gain a deeper understanding of the subject. Each year of full-time study consists of modules totalling 120 credits. This means that during one year of full-time study you complete 1,200 hours of learning and assessment. One module in each year of your study, excluding your first year (Level 3), involves a compulsory one-week block delivery period. This intensive problem-solving week, provides you with an opportunity to focus your attention on particular problems and enhance your team-working and employability skills. Your programme involves a range of assessment types including coursework assignments, laboratory work, presentations and tests. You also work in teams on a design project. In the final year you complete a major individual project which includes a poster presentation and project report.
