Course summary

The Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Engineering (Two Pathways) provides an industry recognised route into technical and managerial careers in engineering. You can complete the full HNC in 18 months part-time or one year full-time, as opposed to the two years most providers require, saving you time and money. The programme is structured to enable you to train while you work and will allow you to top up to HND once completed. You will study in the new, York College Construction and Skills Centre, a purpose built facility containing two large workshop spaces, engineering labs, classrooms and IT suites meeting the needs of your studies, as well as those of the industry. The Engineering department staff are dedicated to ensure you receive the support you need including one-on-one contact. With a huge range of industry experience, you can be confident you will learn the latest industry practises in state-of-the-art surroundings. Assessment is by assignment work, which includes calculations, lab work, circuit/system simulations, programming, research and investigations. In year 2 there is also a design, implementation and evaluation project. The HNC in Engineering (Two Pathways) feeds directly into the Higher National Diploma in Engineering (Two Pathways) course. This qualification provides opportunities for learners to apply their knowledge and practical skills in the workplace. Full-time learners have the opportunity to do this through formal work placements or part-time employment experience. Course themes across the full course (HNC and HND) include;

  • Engineering Design
  • Research project
  • Professional Engineering Management
  • Engineering Maths
  • Electrical and Electronic Principles
  • Quality and Process Improvement
  • Engineering Science
  • Commercial Programming Software
  • Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Manufacture
