Course summary

Many of the basic concepts underlying Western society found expression for the first time in ancient Greek or Latin. Together with Spanish, they are the language of many highly influential literary and cultural works. Studying Spanish and Classics helps you understand the contemporary world, as well as shedding light on the past. Spanish Spanish is the official language in 20 countries and is widely spoken in four more territories, including the United States. Studying Spanish at the University of Edinburgh, you will be immersed in an extraordinary range of literature, film, poetry and theatre from around the world, explored in its historical context. Intensive language training, including a year abroad, gives you the opportunity to develop advanced speaking, writing, reading and translating skills in Spanish. You will learn how to discern different varieties and registers of the language, and gain crucial intercultural competencies. Classics You can opt to take a Latin, Greek or a non-language pathway through Classics. You will explore the scholarship and literature of the classical world that gave rise to Western society. Why Edinburgh We are unique in Scotland in offering students a full academic year abroad within the four-year honours programme, regardless of whether you spend the year studying or working. Our programme is extremely flexible. In Years 1 and 2, you will choose option courses from a wide range of disciplines, and specialise as you progress through your honours years. You can opt to take electives in other schools, or broaden your linguistic portfolio with another language such as Portuguese or Catalan. When you graduate, you will have the combination of a broad cultural education and the specialist knowledge which employers worldwide value.
