Course summary

This HND course has been developed in conjunction with employers in the Sheffield City Region and addresses the key skills required for a successful career in the computing industries. The course is equivalent to the second year of a degree and top-up options are available for the full BSc (Hons) qualification. The course covers a range of advanced level skills in high demand both locally and internationally. A Sheffield City Region Combined Authority Report found that there are currently specific skills shortages in roles such as • Analytics (Big Data) • Cyber security specialists • Web developers • Innovators • Programmers With the cutting edge technology of 5G expected to hit major cities in the UK in 2019 there has never been a better time to study computing. The HND in Computing is designed to bridge the digital skills gaps with an industry-specialist taught advanced programme. Learners will not only develop key skills across a range of subjects but will develop independence and interdependence via combinations of individual and group projects. The course consists of 120 Credits delivered across 7 units over 1 college year. The units chosen may vary and are all assessed through coursework. Attendance is two days per week but learners are advised that a similar amount of self-study will be required. Sheffield College works in close partnership with several major local companies. Guest speakers and trips out will be arranged throughout the year. There may also be an opportunity to compete in the WorldSkills competition with regional and national heats in a computing related field leading to representing the UK at the world finals. The HND is a level 5 course equivalent to the second year of a degree. Many universities offer one year top-up courses for the full BSc (Hons) or may accept students onto the final year of a computing degree. Modules

Computing Research Project (30 Credits) Students will choose their own project based on a theme provided by the awarding body, Pearson. The project enables students to engage in problem-solving and research activities which are part of the function of a manager. They will develop skills such as communication literacy, critical thinking, analysis, synthesis, reasoning and interpretation which are crucial for gaining employment and developing academic competence. Business Intelligence (15 Credits) Data and information is core to any organisation and business process. The necessity of having meaningful information is the key driver for effective decision making and problem-solving. Learners will examine and use tools and methods associated with data mining, data integration, data quality and data warehousing in conjunction with other information management systems and applications. Network Security (15 Credits) It is estimated that Network Security (NS) breaches occur every second worldwide from small home networks to massive corporate networks. The cost to businesses is in billions, if not trillions. On successful completion of this unit students will be able to discuss with confidence several types of Network Security measures as well as associated protocols, cryptographic types and configuration settings of Network Security environments. Finally, students will be able to test the security of a given network to identify and fix vulnerabilities. Forensics (15 Credits) This unit introduces students to digital forensics involving the use of specialised techniques to investigate the recovery, authentication and analysis of data on electronic data storage devices as well as Network Security breaches and cyberattacks using different tools and techniques. On successful completion of this unit students will be able to carry out digital forensics in accordance with industry and legal guidelines and procedures using different tools as well as understand low-level file structures of several Operating Systems and undertake digital Forensic Investigation of devices. Artificial Intelligence (15 Credits) This unit is designed to introduce the philosophy behind artificial intelligence, the most efficient techniques of AI and various intelligent systems that help us to overcome various challenges. This unit guides the student to investigate the emerging AI technologies which could solve various real-world challenges and problems. Students will also build their own top-down and bottom-up artificial intelligence systems. Games Development (15 Credits) In the field of computing, games development is a multidisciplinary art form that creates worlds that blend player psychology, problem-solving and artificial intelligence with knowledge about dedicated hardware and software platforms. This unit enables students to work in a simulated games development studio with access to a small team of colleagues developing synthesised design documentation before creating their own functional game. Virtual and Augmented Reality Development (15 Credits) The objective of Virtual and Augmented Reality development is to design virtual environments or real world augmentations for numerous beneficial, experimental, educational or entertainment purposes. VR and AR explores the potential to work, interact, play, collaborate and communicate in expansive simulated environments. In this unit students will design, build and simulate a VR or AR software application using any combination of hardware, software, data, platforms and services.

Assessment is via a series of group and individual projects.

Qualification requirements

A previous computing HNC (Level 4) or equivalent is required (available at Sheffield College via UCAS Course code: 4RQ2, Institution Code: S22). Maths and English at GCSE are preferred but not essential. Progression onto a degree top-up will require GCSE Maths and English.
