Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDip) at Royal Northern College of Music - UCAS

Course summary

The RNCM's specialised Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDip) is ideal for music teaching professionals who wish to gain further training and accreditation for their practice, or musicians who have completed an undergraduate or postgraduate course at university or conservatoire and are now looking to specialise in education. Designed to offer flexibility where possible, the programme aims to support applicants who have an established teaching and/or conducting practice, although there may be opportunities for creating new placements, usually with RNCM partners, including music hubs and services. Timetabled and optional modules may offer blended or asynchronous learning and teaching options where appropriate.

Course details

Principal study options

During the application and audition process, you must select which instrument(s) you wish to specialise in for the duration of your course. On this course, you can choose from the following options:

Single specialism

Only one instrument is studied. It may be possible to study a further instrument formatively, but this will not contribute towards the qualification.

Instrument/specialisms

For all courses, you must select at least one specialism from the 'primary' list. For those studying primary/secondary pathways, two instruments may be selected – one from the 'primary' list and one from the 'secondary' list. Joint pathway students may select any two instruments from either list.

Primary instrument/specialism

  • Music

  • Year 1

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent (FHEQ Level 6). While the undergraduate degree will normally be in music, it is not a requirement. At interview, you instead will need to satisfy the College that you have the necessary musical background and demonstrate potential to successfully complete the programme. If your first language is not English, an IELTS score of 7.0 is normally required, exceptions being at the discretion of the admissions panel; if you are continuing from previous RNCM programmes, no further IELTS will be required, and your ability would be assessed at interview. A 1,000-word sample of writing, normally on music (which may be an excerpt from an existing piece of work you have written), using references, is required if your undergraduate degree was not undertaken at the College. It is not possible to transfer from the MEd to any other PG programme, except for the named exit awards above. The policies for Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) and Disclosure and Barring Services (DBS) may be found in the Student Regulation Handbook. It may be possible, for example, to take credits from a PGCE toward the MEd degree.
