This is the 4 year course which includes a Professional Placement Year. Food with Nutrition at Bath Spa University offers a dynamic programme that fuses academic and vocational learning to equip yourself for employment. The food we eat affects our health: how we feel today, tomorrow and in the future. Throughout this course you’ll explore the complexities of the food chain, including the needs and demands of consumers and the controls that exist to ensure food is nutritious and safe. You’ll graduate with a deep understanding of the impact of food provision and the role nutrition plays on health.

More about the Professional Placement Year A Professional Placement Year (PPY), traditionally known as a sandwich year, is where a student undertakes a period of work with an external organisation for between 9-13 months. The placement occurs between the students' second and third years of undergraduate study. Students can engage in up to 3 placements to make up the total time and are required to source the placement(s) themselves with support from the Careers & Employability Team.

Modules

In Year 1 you’ll build a science base,learning the fundamental concepts of human biology, microbiology, anatomy and physiology. You’ll also learn about consumer perceptions of the food supply chain, and develop your practical, study and ICT skills. Year 2 gives you more detail in the topics covered in Year 1, laying the foundations for your third year dissertation. You’ll investigate the role of diet in normal health, explore food quality and new food product development. You’ll also choose from a range of optional modules, and have the opportunity to complete a Work Placement module. Finally in Year 3 you’ll critically evaluate the national and international concepts of risk assessment and their application at all stages of the food systems. You’ll conduct a primary research investigation alongside optional modules, and opt to collaborate with an organisation in the food and nutrition sector for an independent project.
