Course summary

We offer both an MSc Advanced Clinical Practitioner programme and an MSc Advanced Clinical Practitioner Apprenticeship programme depending on your funding route. These interdisciplinary postgraduate courses will prepare you to become a competent and confident Advanced Clinical Practitioner (ACP). Our MSc Advanced Clinical Practice and MSc Advanced Clinical Practice Apprenticeship programmes aim to develop your skills, knowledge and capabilities as an Advanced Clinical Practitioner (ACP) within your specialty, sector or setting. They have been designed by experienced and senior clinicians to equip you with the knowledge, skills, values and attitudes (behaviours) to meet the requirements of the Multi-Professional Framework of Advanced Clinical Practice introduced by Health Education England in 2017. The programmes have been designed to meet the four pillars of advanced practice:

  • clinical practice
  • leadership and management
  • education
  • research.
You will have the opportunity to work within your practice or other healthcare settings and learn from lecturers who are experienced advanced clinical practitioners actively engaged in clinical practice. These multi-professional programmes are aimed at practitioners aspiring to develop and work at an advanced level of practice. They also provide experienced advanced clinical practitioners with the opportunity to evidence, and where necessary develop, the core capabilities and specialty specific competencies across the four pillars of advanced clinical practice (clinical practice, leadership and management, education, and research) at master’s level. Students will come from a range of regulated healthcare professions such as nursing, pharmacy, therapeutic and diagnostic radiography, physiotherapy, paramedics, speech and language therapy, dietetics, and occupational health, who are working in a variety of specialties, settings or sectors."

Modules

The MSc Advanced Clinical Practice programme includes six core taught modules, one elective 15-credit module and the MSc dissertation. ACP students who work in a profession where they are not eligible to prescribe or in a role where they are not required to prescribe, will undertake elective module(s) to complete 30 credits that meet the ACP programme learning outcomes. Assessment method

To apply for the MSc Advanced Clinical Practice and MSc Advanced Clinical Practice Apprenticeship programmes you must have a current UK health professional registration with a regulatory body (e.g. Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC) or Health and Care Professional s Council (HCPC)). You should have a second class or above (2:2 classification) honours degree or evidence of master’s level (level 7) study for a module of 15 credits or more in a relevant subject from an approved institution of higher education. In addition, for MSc Advanced Clinical Practice Apprenticeship only, you should have achieved a minimum qualification of level 2 in English and Mathematics (as per general apprenticeship requirements). Where it is not possible to provide evidence of this, you need to undertake the national numeracy and literacy (functional maths and English) before you are offered a place on the programme. You need to have a current job contract in a clinical area or a role where you will have the opportunity to develop advanced clinical practice skills, knowledge and behaviours. You must have a minimum of 3-years post-registration experience, 2 of which should ideally be within the speciality, setting or sector you are training as an ACP in. You need written confirmation from your employer, clinical supervisor, and line manager that they will support you to complete the programme. You need to complete the A&B Employer Support form, found in the How to Apply link, and return with your application. For candidates who meet the above requirements, but do not have a degree with a classification of 2.2 and above, or who have not completed a module at Level 7, will be given the option to undertake a core module from year 1 of the programme and if successful, this credit will be transferred into the programme.
